Machine guns and MPs are just for emergencies. Like relocating when you get spotted.
You don't use them for assault charging...although I haven't played 4 so maybe they changed shit so you have to charge at some point...if they did that's dumb.

If it's like the other games you should be able to play through the entire game on hardest difficulty without being detected.

III can be hard to do the whole thing solo undetected on hardest difficulty but it is still possible.
Most people use co-op to make the game easier, I assume 4 is probably the same.
