Default Why is my ethernet so slow?

I set up my switched ethernet today, but it is extremely slow. When I copy a 60mb file to the other computer, the transfer message says it'll take 30 minutes. Is there a way to fix this? The network includes a 100mb full duplex switched hub. Also, on the box it says the network can go up to 200mb/s with full duplex enabled, but in the network properties, it says that it's going at only 100mb. Does anybody know a fix for either of these situations?

You probally mean 100Mbit which is 12MB/s, but your probally also doing other stuff on the pc's that also need to access the HD/mem/cpu so that'll decrease the speed it's going at, also make sure that both computers contain a 100Mbit card, and that they're both going at 100Mbit and not at 10Mbit.

Furthermore, NEVER trust what the estimated time is... :p

Also keep in mind that for this particular situation (copying files between computers) it is your upload that is limiting the speed, not your download.

If you want to test the speed, go to a website that provides bandwidth tests (just search in google, easy to find).

He said that he has a full duplex 100Mbit network so this shouldn't be the problem. (talking about copying from a pc to another pc inside a homenetwork i think, so your internet download, and upload speeds don't really matter unless you've got a really fast internet which is taking up a big amount of the bandwith that the switch and cable can handle, but I'm almost sure that he doesn't have a net connection that would take up that much of the available 100Mbit.)

My guess is that one PC is only capable of 10Mbit/s or has a NIC that only transfers at 10Mbit/s.

Both pc's have a 100mb ethernet card, but one of the pc's has an SiS integrated ethernet card on it that is of a different manufacturer than the linksys hub and card on the other computer. I figured out that the estimated time thing wasn't valid, and it only took about a minute. But why would a 60mb file transfer in 1 minute if it is supposed to travel 100mb/s? Also, when I run a game off the other computer's hard drive through the network, the game loads really slow and sometimes doesn't even run at all. Is this supposed to happen?

uh remind yourself it's not 100MB a sec but 100 MBITS per sec therefor about 12MB/sec. K? Make this mistake again and you're baka :p and 60MB for 1 minute is still slow as far as what's causing it, no idea.

What are the specs of both PCs? and were you doing anything else at the same time.

I know it's a stupid question, but it has to be asked. Are you sure of the specs of the network hardware? Are you sure it's a 100mbit switch and not a 10mbit? Are you even sure it's a switch?
Also, if you only have to PCs, you didn't need the switch, a X-over cable between the two would have done fine. Perhaps it's dodgy cabling.
Finally, open a DOS window, (start menu>run>cmd or command) then type the command 'ping <adress of other PC>' and tell us the results. Maybe you're dropping packets?

This is the network that I have:
    http://www.linksys.com/products/prod...cid=34&prid=15

I tested the network again for transfering files. I transfered a 50mb rar file to the other computer and it took well over 3 minutes (after 3 minutes I just stopped the transfer cuz it was taking too long). The estimated time was 27 minutes. My computer's specs are:

    Windows Xp Professional
    900mhz Athlon
    128 mb pc 133 sdram
    16mb SiS 730S video card

    Windows Xp professional
    500mhz Athlon
    256mb pc100 sdram
16mb Diamond Stealth something video card

Edit: I just installed both pc's with the same network card that came with the bundle (linksys nic). I also figured out that transferring a 50mb file from the 500mhz pc to the 900mhz pc takes only 20 seconds. But from the 900mhz to the 500mhz takes about 25 minutes!
