    Default EPSXE Emulator Troubles

    Hi All,

For the last couple of years, I have gotten quite a bit of mileage out of the latest epsxe on my laptop, and played a bunch of great games I otherwise would have had to shell out for a PS1 to play. Up until now, all the games I played have run pretty smooth.

Recently, I booted up, having not played any emu games in a while, and found that action on-screen caused noticeable lag / slow-down. The biggest example has been in FFVIII, where the game lags for the following (from what I've seen so far) instances:

    -when drawing magic spells.
    -during GF summon animations.
    -occasionally in general.

I notice lag in other games I used to play regularly as well (e.g. Tekken 2 & 3, Resident Evil). I tried playing around with the video plugins and configurations, but have so far been unable to get "perfect" performance. For reference, my laptop is a Dell Inspiron, with AMD A10-8700P Radeon R6 processor (not a good "gaming" laptop by any means, but decent at playing older PC games, like Half-Life 2). My video configuration is as follows:

    Plugin: Pete's OpenGL2 Driver 2.10
    Author: Pete Bernert
    Card vendor: ATI Technologies Inc.
    GFX card: AMD Radeon R6

    Resolution/Color:
    - 640x480 Window mode
    - Internal X resolution: 1
    - Internal Y resolution: 1
    - Keep psx aspect ratio: off
    - No render-to-texture: off

    - Filtering: 0
    - Hi-Res textures: 0
    - TexWin pixel shader: off
    - VRam size: 0 MBytes

    Framerate:
    - FPS limitation: on
    - Frame skipping: off
    - FPS limit: Auto

    Compatibility:
    - Offscreen drawing: 0
    - Framebuffer effects: 1
    - Framebuffer uploads: 0

    Misc:
    - Scanlines: off
    - Mdec filter: off
    - Screen filtering: off
    - Shader effects: 0/1
    - Flicker-fix border size: 0
    - GF4/XP crash fix: off
    - Game fixes: on [00000000]

Could anyone give me any advice, or pointers, or better configurations to try? I would really appreciate it.

    Thanks,

    neosoc

Use the OpenGL plugin instead of the OpenGL2 plugin and you should be good.

I looked on the Pete's OpenGL website, but wasn't exactly sure which one I wanted to download. What's it specifically called, and could you give me a good place to find it? Thanks.

Opengl 1.7 I think is the one. Or 1.6

I currently have Pete's OpenGL Driver 1.76 which I got from a package that has been removed from the main site.

I'm not able to find it right now either but it has an identical configuration window to this driver so this may be the updated version. I have both.

Recently downloaded that one (P.E.Op.S./Pete's OpenGL Windows GPU Version 1.78). So far, after a bit of fiddling, the spell drawing and GF summon slowdowns on FFVIII seem to have gone away. Though, the "transitions" to battles are a bit glitch-y, and there's still slowdown on Tekken 3. In Resident Evil 2, the colors are a bit off, and the inventory has blanked out sections. Could you suggest any particular configurations to try?

If you look at the bottom line of the configuration window, Special game fixes, click the box with ... and look for 0x0002 where it specifically lists FFVIII, that might help.

Missing graphics or "see-through" are usually related to Off-Screen Drawing so raising that might help, but the Special Game Fix lists specific settings so try those first.

Its time to chant my old mantra, use RetroArch and not epsxe.

you only need a one time setup then its smooth sailing, can play your games with no issues.

If you need a hand il try to help the best I can.
THE BEST METHOD to run PSX games (and everything else for that matter) is via Retroarch - http://buildbot.libretro.com/nightly/
If you have any questions on how to set it up on Windows please feel free to ask, its very easy.
