    Default Controller issues

    Hi guys,

First time I have tried emulators before and I am so glad I came across this website!

Anyway, I am trying to play the PS1 game - Yu-Gi-Oh Forbidden memories but I am having trouble hooking my controller up to my laptop. I have bought, what my computer reads as a Xbox360 controller from Amazon (although it is one of the cheap ones), and it is wired but when I try to configure it, I'm not having much luck. I have managed to configure the gamepad in terms of the buttons but even then when I start the game, it is not picking up anything associated with the gamepad, even though the keyboard buttons seem to work.

Does anyone have any suggestions please? Or do I need to post a bit more information? I have tried playing with the analog/digital settings still nothing helps.

    Thanks,

Cheap or expensive, Xbox360 or not, doesn't matter. The emulator should recognize it if the computer recognize it (and you say it does). Are you using ePSXe?

    Hi, thanks for the response.

Yep the computer seems to recognise it, although I'll try it on one of my steam games to double check but like I said, I managed to configure the buttons...

Yeah, I'm using ePSXe, I'll have another play around with the digital/analog settings. I tried using the F5 button (which I read in another thread) but that didn't seem to work either

    Cheers,

Okay, after you've plugged your controller in, started the ePSXe, then went to Config > GamePads > Port 1 > Pad 1, then clicked some button and pressed the corresponding button on your controller - does anything change? It should say something like J1_B5, or J1_LEFT, or something similar. Does that happen?

One solution would be to get JoyToKey or XPadder and map the controller buttons to keyboard keys. If you play any games where you need to press R2 and L2 together, you're going to need this.

If it is an official XB360 controller you'll need the MS XB360 controller driver to get it to work. A third party XB360 controller should have come with a driver disc and if it didn't then that is probably the root of the problem.

Win 10, so I'm told, automatically installs the driver for the offical XB360/XB360 For Windows Controller but earlier Windows, definitely WinXP and Win7, have to be downloaded and installer manually.

If I remember correctly when I tried my official wired XB360 controller with a WinXP laptop it did recognise it as a controller but I couldn't get it to work properly until I installed the driver.

Maybe of interest so I'll mention it is that the Sony PS/PSOne/PS2 Dualshocks all work OK with just a what seems to be simple USB adapters ie. no driver necessary. I've owned two and they've both work perfectly with all those Dualshocks on WinXP and Win7 machines.

Many games do need Joy2Key or Xpadder remapping whatever controller is used.

Did you solve your problem? If nothing else works, I guess there's no other choice but to use Joy2Key or Xpadder.

Try rebooting, as well - sometimes that'll do the trick.
