I should just finally get a wireless card for the computer. Range would probably be better than the little usb dongle thingy I'm using.

You place it where the connection is still good and it'll boost the range.
If you have a spare wifi router around you might be able to use that.

Don't think that will work. There's nowhere to place it unless I hide it in the ceiling on the second floor or something. Having one somewhere else in my tiny apartment won't do much good.

Anyhow this seems to be working for now.

Should actually work better than getting a wireless card if the router is decent. Put it right at your window.

Also I think my new wireless mouse is interfering with the signal. Wasn't working at all and then when I popped out the little nano receiver bang it worked again

Hmmm I have a usb extension cable here, maybe if I put the nano on that and moved it to the other side of the desk it won't interfere? My dongle is in the front of the pc and the nano in the back so the wireless signal for the mouse is passing right by it maybe?

I've never encountered this before. I can't really goto the office and explain why I'd want to switch channels on the router either.
