Can you boot from a Linux USB/DVD and see if you can salvage anything to an external HDD?

If you have Windows 8 or 10 you can make a WindowsToGo USB that has a full install of windows that you can run from a USB thumb drive. I think there is a work-around to use it with 7, too, but that was limited to USB2.0 and the lower speeds there.

Did you get an extended warranty on your HDD? It won't replace the lost data but it will at least save you the price of replacing the drive. Always a good idea when money isn't too tight.

I have played Dead Island and loved it. Every character can get the skill to stomp heads, which can save you a ton of repair costs, especially when you learn to jump kick all the walkers/infected. The skill trees are very reminiscent of Borderlands, but in a gritty zombie infested island paradise. Consider Dead Island: Riptide if you can find it, or both.

Pretty extreme graphic violence and gore, in case your mommy will be watching.

You can make a bootable win7 USB stick easy enough using Rufus.

I'm wondering if the drive isn't completely dead but has some bad physical sectors or whatever...

I wa looking at some screenshots on gamefaqs but they were mostly of menus no actual gameplay. sounds more action than survival/horror.

The more recent AitD isn't all that good tbh.
Condemned 1&2 should be cheap but they aren't great games.
Dead Island & Riptide are fun, you can play solo or online co-op. The first game has a goty edition with an extra sp story involving a character you can't play in the main game.

There's also Dead Space 1-3, the 2nd game has a special edition that includes a bonus game.
A dirt cheap game often overlooked by people is Singularity.
The Walking Dead Survival Instinct is pretty crap to look at (looks like a release PS3 game imo), but if you can get it dirt cheap it might be worth playing
