    Default Sega Master System

Hey who here remembers this system. I just got the rom set for this, and it reminded me about my childhood. I remember that I had a Master System, instead of a Nintendo for awhile. I also remember some bomb ass games that I started to play again. Like Choplifter, Double Dragon, Rescue Mission, and Penguin Land. So yea

Double Dragon's graphics were better then the NES versions, but the game itself was just busted. It was way too easy to die on that one. Anyway, I owned a Master System back in the day, and it was pretty sweet. The only thing I hated about it was the general lack of games. Nintendo had an exclusivity clause written into it's contracts with developers that stated they could not release a game on both the Master System and the Nintendo, at least in the U.S.. The graphics on the thing were killer back then though, and the games that were out were fun for the most part. I remember playing Alex Kidd for hours on end, and I really wish I hadn't sold my copy of Phantasy Star....

Haha, I remember having fun with the rather poor game known as 'Altered Beast'... More recently I was playing Phantasy Star on an emulator and realising evermore that 'graphics don't mean squat'

To tell the truth, I've never seen a Master System in real life. While it was a piece of cake to find a buyable NES, I did not even once in my childhood, see a Master System or a Genesis. I wonder why...

I actually own a Master System right now! I forgot, because it goes unused. I don't have the proper connections, and so I can't use it! ARGH! Urge to play crappy built in Maze Game rising....

Oh yeah, I remeber the maze! Didnt you have to hold a combination of buttons upon switching the console on to get it to load, before directing a snail round the mazes? Heh heh, good clean fun

I was going to buy one at this gaming store, but I didn't have the money. I hope it's still there...

It depends which model you buy. I think it's the second model that has Alex Kidd built in, which is the model I had back in the day.

According to FAQ's listed on Gamfaqs:

There are also 3 (possibly 4) different built-in software variations of the
SMS I. I assume these systems replaced the base units and carts listed in
    the above packages. They are:

    #1. Hang On/Safari Hunt
    #2. Missile Defense 3-D
#3. Hang On/Astro Warrior (exist? I have yet to encounter one)
    #4. Hang On

    Europe got:

In Europe, players were given the same pack-ins as those in the states --
concerning the original "Sega Master System." They also received the
    following:

Sega Master System Power Base, Hang-On cart, 2 controllers, hook-ups,
product code 3010 (contributed by [email protected])

Sega Master System II, w/Alex Kidd in Miracle World built-in; Sonic the
    Hedgehog cart pack-in, controller(s?), hook-ups

Sega Master System II, w/Sonic the Hedgehog built-in, controller, hook-ups

"Sega Master System Plus", a SMS I with light gun and Operation Wolf
    cart (?), controller(s?), hook-ups

"Sega Super System", SMS I with 3D glasses (game?), controller(s?), hook-ups

"Sega Super System Plus", SMS I with light gun, 3D glasses, Missile Defense
    3D and Operation Wolf carts, controller(s?), hook-ups

SMS II, Sonic 1, Sonic 2 (assuming Sonic 1 built-in, Sonic 2 as cart),
    controller, hook-ups

SMS II, Sonic 1, Columns, Super Monaco Grand Prix, 3rd game (title?)
(Sonic built in, other three as a three game cart (Master Games 1)),
    controller(s?), hook-ups

SMS II, Lion King, controller, hook-ups

I guess the point is that what game came built into which model depended on the pack in deal you bought, and what territory you lived in...

So I was just lucky that I got Alex Kidd ...... (or unlucky if you look at the many many hours it stole from my life!)

I'd call it lucky. That game was fun.
