    Hmmmm...

Got a spare couple hundred bucks right now. Transfer over my GT710, maybe my ram depending on how it's already arranged. Bring my HDDs over. Might be able to run Fallout 4 etc...

I'd try getting them down on the price. It should be a nice performance bump over a C2D.

Probably is as the standard PS1 & 2 av composite cables can be used on PS3.
Only thing is; I'm not sure if PS3 can run 720/1080p through the av port

Yes it is compatible and it can go to 1080i provided the display you are using also supports that.

I looked at the manual and it claims you can run up to 1080p using component...for games anyway.
I read somewhere that BD video is a little different, I think at some point (not sure which console model but probably slims onwards) Sony made it so you couldn't output HD resolutions without using hdmi.

I'd assume that applies to all models on BD playback.

Well apparently old models don't have that restriction. It has to do with how the hardware works not the firmware.
1080p over component was phased out because it was seen as a way to copy BD easily. AACS standards.
That's just what I've read anyway, I have no way of checking it myself as I don't have a component cable set for PS2/3.

I mean it doesn't bother me anyway, I don't use my PS3's for watching movies.
I just wasn't sure about HD outputs over component...my memory isn't great and after doing some reading I realised why I thought HD might only work over hdmi.

The same might be true of BD players, maybe early mainstream brands allowed HD over component but then phased it out to comply idk
I'd have to check my cheap RF BD player at some point to see if that doesn't have any restrictions, it's newer than 2011 but having BD region switching right there in the menu (without using codes) isn't widely accepted anyway.
