When you had it running ok did you ever hear any pops or clicks coming from the console?

Put the HDD back in and try turning the console on. Make sure the screw for the HDD is secure but don't go crazy on it, those screws are easily damaged.

YLOD isn't a solid yellow light. It's an extremely brief flash of yellow before going red, it can be very easy to miss if you're looking for a full yellow light.

If you're 100% sure it isn't ylod then it's entirely possible it's just the psu that is faulty. Yeah there's still some power there but not enough to run the console properly.

But given the fact that the BD drive is dead I dunno if it's worth trying to get this working again tbh Unless you can find a donor console (salvage the psu) for free that is ylod.

Consoles dying is always a possibility, early PS3 and 360 consoles are prone to certain failures. Some issues can be fixed or worked around (dead optical drive, faulty psu or simply bad switches).

YLOD you can try a reflow yourself if you feel you have nothing to lose, but even if you get it working it will fail again eventually.
If you have some thermal paste there and wanna try a reflow it's best to apply new paste. You could also replace the thermal glue under the heat spreader with thermal paste but removing the spreader can be a tricky job, you need to use an oil painting knife (it's easy to damage other components).

I decided to open it up so I could check the psu for power it is getting power seems a little inconsistent 3-5v to the switch. as for reflowing I don't have thermal paste and for it to only be a temp fix doesn't seem worth it.
just gonna bite the bullet and get another one when I can afford it next time it'll be a slim if they're any better. oh I did get the fan test to work after trying to hold down the eject button while turning the power switch on.

If you get a slim just be careful about 25xx, the exploit doesn't work on all of them. 20xx and 21xx are exploitable.

there wen't a lot of progress
Hopefully you can still return it. Seems like you just got it so if it was from eBay or a store you should be okay. I know you said where you got it before but it's early and my brain isn't functioning yet.

So ideally you can get your money back. Given that the drive was already crapped out it was likely the console was in bad general shape as well. If you can, I'd get a slim. It's worth how much more it costs since they are much more stable.

Only one thing to do now, go through its pockets and look for loose change.

I don't know if I can return it. I don't know what kind of return window it had and I've had it for two weeks and have used it for those 2 weeks plus I cfw'd it.

Dying in two weeks means it was on it's way out/was practically dead when you got it. Was it eBay? I didn't want to go back and look. If it was eBay as long as you didn't already leave positive feedback you are still well within the claim window. The cfw didn't harm it at all, not that they'd even be able to tell anyway since it's totally boned.

ebay and I did leave positive feedback I usually do when I get something and it works after checking it out. guess it's a hard lesson learned don't leave feedback unless it's been at least a month.

On most stuff it doesn't matter but something like a fat PS3 that is prone to failure, definitely good to wait. I'm pretty sure that makes it so you can't file a claim but I guess you could check, or just message the seller (but I suspect they likely knew it was about to ylod).
