The big console manufacturers don't really need defending from the horror of a market that exists in every single other industry in existence.

Microsoft just wanted more control over the market and to cause further divide for a stronger base. You still see them trying with the Windows store, which is infamous for releasing major releases broken constantly. They're just really bad at anything besides being a good third party console box (their exclusives have become background noise in the past few years).

Please keep in mind all of the big three want to do this and make plays regularly because they're businesses. It's generally good policy to look at all these guys with a critical eye because they're all pretty inept in at least one field and other others are quick to capitalize on those weaknesses. Sony sticks out for their cocky attitude after they make big wins, like that huge shade they cast over Microsoft's always on insanity. Afterwards, they started making a lot of small mistakes and assumptions. Probably the height of this behavior was the PS3 launch, which was vastly overpriced with confusing hardware, given one of the most embarrassing E3 showings ever. The Xbox One announcement was effectively Microsoft's version of that.

I tend to respect Nintendo a bit more than the other three most days because they pretty much do whatever they want, but they're also the hardest on streamers and video producers, not to mention their lackluster understanding of online. I think I respect Sony the most because they pick up on what their audience once most faster than anyone else and have a really varied line of exclusives, especially now that they've brought back Crash. Even at their weakest, there's usually something for everyone.

I prefer PC, though, because I usually don't play big releases but weird indie games or doujin releases. You don't need particularly impressive specs for something like, say, The Magic Circle or Broforce. That said, I do miss owning physical disks, but that seems to be going away in console spaces anyways with a mess of major releases requiring a company server or disks just being a small part of the whole release that you have to download in patches once installed.

I've been jumping between MS and Sony consoles for the most part, both have had strengths and weaknesses. Like I said I'm not a PC gamer anymore and haven't been into that for many many years...so MS consoles have been good for me in the sense that multi plat games are generally a little better.
The controllers too are more suited for my needs tbh I got a PS3/4 Hori controller recently though which is a big improvement over DS3/4 layout imo.

That being said I've had and got more Sony consoles than any other manufacturer. I'm just not into the jrpgs like I was back in the PSX days (the exception being Souls games I guess, but they're wrpg to me), and I honestly can't stand most of the other anime style crap now. And Nintendo is mostly games for children...pretty much the same games too, occasionally with much better graphics.

JRPGs have been on a big downward spiral for awhile, now you have to look at what indie and doujin groups make, like Helen's Mysterious Castle or Cosmic Star Heroine. I'd say Nintendo has the best exclusives and Sony the most varied, but that's starting to shift a bit as the Fire Emblem series is slowly going downhill with its new direction and Sony keeps releasing cinematic focused turds like The Order 1886. That may be good for the long run, though, because it means more games are being released everywhere for anyone to try.

I'm curious to how consoles will stick around because becoming mini PCs with controllers isn't going to last forever. Nintendo seems to have the right idea by experimenting with control styles, the portable Switch stuff works way better than anyone expected and shows a lot of promise to make an experience you can only get on that console. I personally think VR is going to be a dead end, but I may get surprised there as the tech improves.

"Cinematic" games aren't so bad...well as long as they're interesting. The Order wasn't fantastic but after hearing everybody poo-poo it for ages I got it cheap (when I finally got a PS4) and I've definitely seen worse stuff than that. In fact some popular games are worse than that for me, FF13 for example.
And I'm fine with games like Heavy Rain, LA Noire etc. It's actually good to have something now and then that you can just relax with...and not be a game for little kids that happens to be easy

Consoles will last in whatever form. Plenty of people like me just can't be bothered with PC now (and most I know are around my age give or take 5-8 years) even though we messed around with stuff like that a fair bit when we were young.

I don't mind cinematic stuff either (I mean I'm a guy who likes a lot of so called "walking sims"), but The Order 1886 is a pretty poor excuse for an exclusive, as was Beyond Two Souls. I think David Cage ran out of steam after Heavy Rain, which is still a pretty mixed bag.

    Heavy Rain is fine.
Next you'll say all the Uncharted games suck balls too much shootan and cut scenes...or whatever.

Eh, Heavy Rain is kind of in the middle. I like a lot of its ambitions and the direction of scenes, but some scenes are kind of hilarious when they weren't supposed to be. Kind of got the same vibe in Indigo Prophecy, which I didn't mind as much because that game ended up being so ridiculous in universe. Beyond Two Souls was just bad. The problems with David Cage games isn't the cinematics, it's that Cage's writing is kind of bad and only survives with good actors. Beyond's script was so bad that not even William Dafoe could save it.

What don't you like about new Fire Emblem? FE's one of my favorite series, and I love most of the games personally. Only FE2, 6, and 12 really don't do anything for me.

I may be in a minority here, but honestly, I love cinematic games. I think of them as a genre to play to unwind after maybe a long day of work, or school. Yeah, there are bad ones (such as The Order or Quantum Break), but I really enjoy em. I even enjoyed Beyond Two Souls honestly, and I'm excited for Detroit: Become Human.

New FE is becoming so anime that it's starting to get all the bad parts of anime we'd all rather didn't exist, and this is coming from a guy who has a history of seriously writing about porn doujins.

The series peaked with Path of Radiance for me and never recovered.

I have to disagree personally Darkseid. I personally loved FE Fates Conquest (Birthright was fun, Rev was meh), and adored Echoes. I never played Awakening personally though, as I never found a physical copy. I will agree with you though that PoR was the pinnacle of the franchise.

I don't really have a particular preference with modern console manufacturers. Like Cookie said, I just go wherever the exclusives I like best go. If I had to pick a company I like best of the current big three, I'd go with Nintendo for mostly nostalgic reasons. But I don't have any overwhelming loyalty to any of them.

If we're talking old consoles as well, though, I must admit I have something of a soft spot for Sega stuff. The Master System, Game Gear, Mega Drive, Saturn, and Dreamcast each hold very fond memories for me for one reason or another, and Sega's consoles tend to be the old platforms I go back to most regularly now (I was playing the Saturn just yesterday~ ^^/). And even though I don't even follow most of their IPs very closely anymore, if Sega were to reenter the console market, I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't be tempted to buy in for nostalgia's sake. :'D
