All other things equal, of course higher resolution is the better choice .

I'd have to look really hard to find a PAL only set now, and probably can't even find any new tbh.

With old tv shows think of it like old 8bit console games. A lot of PAL releases are bad conversions from NTSC, that is why they are bad.
If all the games were actually made for PAL back then they would look better because the resolution is better.
Well with BBC (and other old PAL tv shows) the source is PAL. You convert 576 to 480 and the higher refresh rate doesn't mean shit, basically.
Bitrate doesn't really matter because it's like; wow I've got this high quality 480 rip from 576.

PAL is obviously the superior format for movies/TV. I'm not saying it isn't. On games it's debatable, since you're taking a hit either way .

I don't see the difference between 50 and 60Hz as a hit myself. You don't notice something like that, or if you think you do then you adjust easily. I use 24p for films.
The difference between 480 and 576 is noticeable though. I've seen old Doctor Who episodes in NTSC that look kinda blurry and dull, PAL is sharper and cleaner.

The 60 to 50Hz thing is mostly about bad conversions, as I already said. You convert the other way and it's pointless padding really.

Anyway, at the end of the day for Red Dwarf it's only $$ that matter. The old episodes aren't high quality tv or anything As you saw in that vid the sfx is budget.
I can't believe you guys never watched it though

I've hardly seen anything that aired on BBC in the 80s/90s, let alone older.

With TV, yeah. With games it depends on how the engine works. Newer console games don't have this problem because most of it runs at crap framerates anyway .

I watched Dune (80s movie) for the first time the other day. The special effects have held up nicely. Some of the sets, the Emperor's Throne Room for example, are crazy.
