    Default hard drive partition question

while installing win 7 on my hdd yesterday I created a 40gb partition for the installation but once the install was done I noticed that my drive size only read as 40gb and that the remaining 193 or so gb was missing.
did I mess something up and should have gone with a larger partition size? can I regain that lost space now that I have the os installed?

Windows has a built in partition wizard. You probably have 193 GBs of unallocated space.
Click your start button and type partition, the actual name of it should pop up.

You can use partition manager software to either resize that partition you have, or add one or more extra partitions using the unallocated space.
I think EaseUS has a free version, but I use an old full version of Acronis has never let me down and I never had to grab anything newer. There are other options but if you want something completely free I would try that first one I mentioned, it seems fairly popular.

I could be wrong but I don't think that's comprehensive, which might be part of the reason it's hidden away. I think I remember reading that it couldn't move partitions...dunno if there was anything else.

It is very basic, but it can expand and allocate space which is all grouch wanted.
EaseUS is pretty nice. I used it to format FATex to THAT 32 which almost no other programs offered.

The old Acronis Director I have does everything...the only odd thing I've needed anything else for was reformatting messed up micro SD cards and I have Panasonic formatter for that.
