    Default The Web-Junior Corner

    Have a question? Want to know where to go for more information on coding or scripting languages of any kind? Want someones opinion on your website? Want to know any information in general? Well, this is where to ask it. From HTML to Javascript to PHP to ASP, our members know it all and will likely be able to help you much more than any book or website. Provided their grammar isn't effected by their vast coding knowledge. That enough sucking up for you? Good.

    Rules:

    1. Don't ask a question that has been asked before unless there is information that wasn't provided that you need to know.

    2. Provide as much information as possible with your first post, and edit posts afterwords if no one has replied. Double posts will be treated and spam and will be deleted regardless of information.

    3. If you don't know the answer, don't bother posting.

    I'm looking for a tutorial on flash animation.

    Right now I have a gif that could really do with some sfx, so I was going to redo it in flash. Is this easy to do? (I have little very paitence). Nothing fancy, just very basic. (tis an intro for my bands webby)

    If it's nothing overly fancy and just touching up some of what's there, I don't think it's too hard as long as you have at least a basic understanding of Flash. I always found http://www.flashkit.com to be a good website, but there are several others out there.

    If you're going to be doing any actionscripting, http://www.actionscript.org is a great site. Best site there relating to the coding aspect of flash, in my opinion.

    I'm trying to set up a basic MySQL query PHP script, but I can't find which function to use. The function from the tutorial I'm using gives me an error reading "Supplied argument is not a valid MySQL result resource".

    This is the code I'm using for the script.

    <div style='background-color: #ffffff'>
    PHP Code:
    $db mysql_pconnect("localhost","nacb1610","letmein");
    mysql_select_db('nacb1610');
    $query "select * from entries where ".$searchtype." like '%".$searchterm."%'";
    $result mysql_query($query);
    $row mysql_fetch_row();
    echo(
    $row[1]);
    </div>

    The background is white just so it's easier to see for anyone using the new skin.

    Your problem is with this line:
    PHP Code:
    $row mysql_fetch_row();
    You haven't specified a row number.

    That doesn't work either. I've got two entries in the database for testing, and it still gives me "Supplied argument is not a valid MySQL result resource" when I put 0, 1, or 2 in the ()s. But that is the line it says the error is on. I probably should have said that to start with.

    EDIT: Somewhere else I found that the error is most likely coming from an mess-up in the installation of PHP. Since this is on a free host, I'm installing PHP, MySQL, and a web server on my computer, see if it works. If it doesn't, I'll be back.

    EDIT2: Got it working on my own server, finally. Only took about three days.

    Default Javascript problems!

    Hello, my name is BlargMonster. BLARG!!!!!!! hehe, ok. I was having trouble with my ace rom site, http://www.geocities.com/extreme_x_giddygranny, and i need your help. I was wondering what the java stuff was to make the granny's face fall off when my site gets 1000 hits. Basically, I figure that if old people are going to have free bus tickets, then they might aswell have free games, so I'm trying to appeal to the older market as it's a dripping wet cheese sandwich that quite frankly, needs to addressed and cashed in on.

    I don't know any fancy html, or have any super graphical tricks up my sleeve, but I have a heart...and a granny, and together with my digital camera I can make this work, with your help. I've been looking for a decapitated face javascript for months now, I know I can't fully open the site until I get it, that's why the news hasn't been updated since mid april...I need someone with a few wrinkly beats in their old ticker of theirs and a little knowledge in the way of javascript.

    That's EXACTLY the kind of response I'm hoping for, "WOW". When people think of emulation they're tired of mario, tired of link...they want something different, and by providing a fully fledged granny emulation site I'm satisfying both the hardcore emulators out there and I'm making a more welcoming interface for any people of a later generation that sometimes feel the emulation scene just isn't for them. Although I regret the fact that this has been moved to the junior webmasters corner (as finding a decapitating head javascript is not a novice question) I'm still hopeful I can get help and maybe even a little feedback on my face related problems.

    I don't think you can do that with Javascript, but it shouldn't be that hard with PHP, just have the PHP write a number to a text file for every "hit" sorta thing - you can find some good ones at http://www.hotscripts.com - and then write that text file as a variable with something that tells it to do something when, say, $count == "1000"

    I'll play around, see if I can get it to work. That's just the kinds of things you should be looking for, however.

    Also, the Web-Junior Corner is just for questions. As it says in the title. This is the place for any kind of question, from HTML to ASP to PHP to mySQL. It's to keep the number of the threads on the low run and to give people somewhere to go to.

    Damn, you sound like someone who knows their stuff, may I ask if you have ever pondered joining an already established grandparent based emulation site? I'm sure the scene could use a fellow such as yourself, you seem to have heart...and my grandmother likes that, well that and playing bridge.

    Any sort of head decapitation script would be brilliant, I know I'm probably breaking a rule here...as a script like this has probably been requested before (I sure know alot of people that have been looking for an automatic decapitating head script) Anyways, it's clear you speak the language of your php fluently...wheras me, well I speak the language of love, a love for a grandparent, a love for emulation.

    /me laughs.

    I know shit about writing PHP, I can just think of how to do it and will have to fiddle. I've taken a stab at it right now with no luck, but I'll post if I get something. In the meantime, you should check the following two sites for a script such as the one you seek, just to see if they would have something:

    http://www.hotscripts.com
    http://www.javascriptsource.com

    All right, I believe I have this working. You will need a webserver which allows you to have PHP - I recommend http://www.coolfreepages.com They will have a popup that will annoy you greatly, but can be removed by placing &lt;noscript&gt; immediately after your closing HTML tag. Enter this into a PHP file and have your banner.jpg file and "no-face" file - whatever you name it, change from "skull.gif" accordingly - within the same directory. I'm assuming you know how to do simple HTML, and if you don't then it's really not that hard to find out.

    PHP Code:
    <?php
    $path
    ="count.inc";
    $file fopen("$path","r+");
    $count fread($filefilesize("count.inc"));
    fclose($file);
    $count += 1;
    $file fopen("$path","w+");
    fputs($file$count);
    fclose($file);

    if (
    $count <= "1000") {
    $img "banner.jpg";}
    else {
    $img "skull.gif";}

    print(
    "<img src=\"$img\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Granny Emulation!\">\n");
    ?>
    You will have to set the CHMOD of "count.inc" to 777, which can be done through your FTP program by right-clicking the file and going to "CHMOD". Any other questions, just ask. CoolFreePages requires you to have an FTP Program - I recommend SmartFTP - to upload the files with.

    Oh yes, and if you want to test to see if it works - I tested it on my computer - then upload all of the files and change "count.inc" to contain the numer 998, then refresh your page once - it should have the normal banner. Refresh it again, and it should have your "face-falling off" thing, which would probably be an animated GIF if what I can figure out of what you're saying is correct. Still having troubles, I'll bundle it all up in a package for you and walk you through it step by step. 'Cause I'm bored like that.
