on a dreamcast not, as the original gdi assembly had an underside shield plate (two plates, upper is the chassis, the lower is the shield) all the guides recommended to not use it, it's not required.
it's true, but on a heat-exchange note, it was part of the original design, and dreamcasts can get a bit warm.
since replacing the under shield, the gdi usb (with chassis) sits as snug on the JVS socket as the original optical setup, and runs a little cooler to boot.
did check to make sure the shield wasn't touching or bridging shit, no issues there.
looking at the older gdi optical controller board, it's fuckin huge, and was practically pressed against the undershield, surprised that wasn't shorted by default.
if i have to reuse that optical assembly for whatever reason (spare/backup replacement part) will have to use a thin bit of plastic and stick it to that shield, won't take any chances with that shit....

v2 dreamcasts have integrated controllers, and won't work with ode's as they are now for it.
