The only console I've had annoying crashes/freezes with is my PS3 slim.
Even my 360 trinity has been well behaved compared to most of the experiences other people seem to have, eg rrod, DVD drive failures, constant crashes and some even turn themselves off

THE BEST METHOD to run PSX games (and everything else for that matter) is via Retroarch - http://buildbot.libretro.com/nightly/
If you have any questions on how to set it up on Windows please feel free to ask, its very easy.
Maybe the NA consoles are more prone to failure? idk. I remember talking to the local EB manager one day about Wii consoles and he said returns for them under warranty are really rare (preowned), in fact he couldn't even recall the last time one was returned with anything more serious than an optical drive failure...which can happen with any used console that has a DVD drive.

Early 360 and PS3 consoles, on the other hand, have heaps of failures.

I'd say it depends on the area and sample size. The NA userbase is surely much, much, larger than Australia.
I'm always hesitant to talk about consoles breaking in case my luck changes, but the only ones that have ever given me any real trouble are a Saturn with a dodgy power supply and a Dreamcast with the usual disc drive issues.
Yes, even Canada by itself has more people than here. I was just using the example of EB though as they are the main trader in used consoles plus they have 12 month warranties.
I doubt EB would be thoroughly checking every 360 traded to weed out any unstable consoles. Basic check to see if it works, box it and sell with warranty.

I had an early original Xbox that just stopped working under new warranty. But I have two of them currently that haven't given me any problems, also had some pass through my hands that have been ok.
I've also got a first model Japanese PSX with a dead laser. But that's just from being used a lot for years on end.

Gyp bought a PS2 slim years ago and the lens went quickly. I've encountered a lot of slims with lens issues over the years but fats are usually dead or working fine.
Oh yeah I have a PS2 fat here atm with a dead laser too But two working slims.
I haven't bothered repairing the PSX and PS2 with dead lasers because I have spare working consoles.
