    Default voice actng in games

I was playing dragon age, skyrm and fallout four (trying to get in wrpg and i love jrpg), and I cant really get into them and then i found one reason why. they sound, bland? emotionless? hell even when one character in inquasition laughs it sounds forced to me, almost to the point of annoying. why are wrpg like that? or am i not playing the right ones? like hyperdimension rebirth 2 made me tear up when i got a certain ending, then the next game made fun of her for it. Yeah i know, some of the same voice actors played in it (i think) but it just seems to me that even the voice actors put more emotion into the games whereas games like dragon age dont. i have to admit i did chuckle on a few lines but that was it. maybe its the dialog, but i just dont enjoy them like people think i should and for a while i couldnt put my finger on it.

so in short, despite the good voice acting why do they sound bland and emotionless in wrpg such as dragon age and fallout and skyrim?

The voice acting in The Witcher is pretty decent, probably my favorite WRPG voice acting from any recent games I got.

Western games tend to mimick real life as in they are bland and lifeless , just like in real life!

I remembered another good one, The Bards Tale - https://www.gog.com/game/the_bards_tale

It had me in stitches back in the day.

I think that you're used to jrpgs, or anime where the voice cast over exaggerates emotions.

I suspect the whole Japanese voice acting in games and anime thing is more to do with escapism. Young Japanese people tend to be more liberated than the older generations, but the culture has been traditionally reserved when it comes to displaying emotion irl. Western cultures are different.

Japanese games are over the top with acting.
In western games you will get the odd one liner but usually delivered deadpan style.

As for Fallout/TES games in particular...plenty of people complain about characters being dull and lack of voice acting variety (recycled voices and lines) but this has never bothered me personally. So much other stuff in the games distracts me from that, plus I prefer not to be force-fed quests, lore etc.

Look past the "emotionless chatter". Don't you have an imagination?

Those are probably some of the best games I've played. The first Dragon Age was pretty good which is the only one I've completed out of that particular series though. Played a ton of Fallout 3 and Vegas for all systems and a hell of a lot of Skyrim too!

Just play the games and don't worry about it. Keep in mind they're sand box games so yeah stuff is bound to be inane and recycled here and there.

Personally I don't care either way about voice acting. I tend to skip cutscenes and/or dialog anyway even on a first run (if possible)
I come from an era before this was even a thing and when it did start like the god awful (mostly) voice acting in say the FMV games of the nineties sorta ruined me for it. I just wanna play. If i want to watch/listen to acting I'll watch a movie.

    2 cents.

You stole Shar's follow-up post. Not joking.

My 02 is that Skyrim is infinitely better/more fun than games like Nep Rebirth 2 as a game which is what is more important than smaller things.

Pretty much . Everything about Skyrim is better than the entire Neptunia series.

Even Japanese honchos are disappointed at the current state of voice work over there: http://en.rocketnews24.com/2014/08/2...-voice-acting/

The closest FILTHYU ENGRISH equivalent to the overacting and melodrama in anime/JRPGs I can think of would be a teen drama.

Fallout 4 is the best for this. B/->/O spam: Crazy old lady... Shut. Up. Stupid grease jockey... Ugh, Minutemen.
Bethesda really made it entertaining to be an ass to everybody.
