I'm more accustomed to using rent to mean games and dvds and hiring for large items such as welders or trucks.

Now, homosexual is mostly used to describe a man that is attracted to or has sex with other men. But if you look it up it isn't gender specific.

Yes rent was pretty much used for video tapes, games even back then, but for hardware or vehicles "hire" was used a lot. Even musicians used that word for gear they had to rent because they couldn't afford to buy it for themselves (amps, speakers etc).

general response to the conversation here:
renting is enforced, it's FAR from a choice to most.
make NO mistake, if i could ACTUALLY buy a home, or a semi-decent deathrace 2000 machine, i would.
it's not an american influence at all, it's an AVARICIOUS global greedy fuck influence.
ALL the real/PRODUCTIVE land is owned.
    dead serious.
UK and her cohorts are killing humanity by greed.
we lost an empire due to this, we WON'T survive as a nation again if the same shit kicks up for the same reason.
    ...
oh, when i was at school, never had any commodore machines, just BBC acorns and an atari ST 1040-FM.
    of, rm-nimbus too.
    this was at secondary school.
    learned nothing but hand-to-hand combat.
in the words of a known wordsmith:
don't let schooling get in the way of your education. (loose translation: don't become a workslave for the rich and evil. develop initiative, BREAK their 'law' if it advances your self-security and freedoms and right to live as a civilian.)
    ...
first machine i even had, was a commodore pet, followed by a sinclair ZX spectrum 48k doorstop.
    fun times.
nintendo and sega were off limits til i left home.
parents were lushes, had no interest in stuff other than dumbass tv.
i bought my shit with odd-job money saved, from doing general chores in the area, local resident assistance.
    [edit]
    typo.

There were still quite a lot of Master Systems and C64s around too but to this day I've never met anyone over here who had a NES. Totally anecdotal I know but it kind of boggles my mind.
I believe we owned one NES, when I was a child. Games were impossible to find.

We had Mario 3, Turtles and Donkey Kong. I think that NES went between us, my uncle and a few other people in the family before going back to my uncle, then to Gamestation IIRC.

I thought the NES was garbage, purely because of the impossibility of getting games for it, didn't have much love for the SNES or Megadrive either, because the PS1/Saturn/N64 were already taking over by then, games weren't that easy to get nor were they cheap.

Everyone always had Amigas because games were free.

^^ floppies were the default, but any media will work if prepared right.
including bdroms, they are just data storage devices after all.
