PSX was instantly popular here. Very expensive but nearly everybody would just hire a console and games from local video stores every now and then until it got cheaper.

Stuff like Spectrum was rare, but a few people had them. Most had C64, myself and most of my friends did anyway.
My first system was a C64 my granddad bought just after I started school. He was determined to get me into computers early and we both learnt how to use it together. So many great memories.

But yeah for kids of all ages, including the really young, I guess many parents couldn't justify the extra money for NES when there was a cheaper system with plenty of titles (although not the same games).
Yeah Nintendo stuff was always a lot more expensive than anything else over here, though I think a lot of the problem was they simply never treated PAL territories seriously back then. The "Nintendo is kiddy" thing used to be quite justified sadly. There was a massive push towards games for very young children shortly after the SNES first came out in Europe, so instead of something like FF IV making its way over here we suddenly got this glut of titles like Thomas the Tank Engine, while the Mega Drive had already built up a library of games like Streets of Rage. Guess which system kids begged their parents for.

Hire was almost always used for renting video players, game consoles and other electrical stuff back then over here. British english.
You can hire a car too. Rent is used more now, but I'm guessing that's an American influence like a lot of other things.

So what I posted is accurate, I could've used rent too but I didn't have to.

When I was in primary school we had Vic20's there. I have a lot of great memories about my early C64 days sleepovers on weekends and us kids would go without sleep until sunday night and try to get some before school on monday.
