That was my mom's first choice for a name.

But it wouldn't fit on the certificate so they had to go shorter.

It's strange. I feel I tend to agree that people become more conservative and open minded as they age. I remember reading a story about how a top university in the US polled students to see if they would repeal the first amendment. Free Speech as we call it. I believe it got like 40% of the polled student voting for this... It's hard to really want to befriend people my age when most are so left-wing that they think anything potentially negative is the worst thing you can ever say. Not into the idea of dating a transsexual? Terrible person, get away from us...

I'm honestly afraid for the future of the States when people my age gain power, which since most of the highest radical left-wing(I kinda hate that term) SJWs are in these Universities where they kind of force this feeling into others bothers me. Can you imagine some of the laws these people would make?

I think a lot of these issues are caused by how most Universities handle hiring and the teachers also pushing this agenda onto the student.

I also believe most of Bernie Sanders policies aren't really that realistic, and I believe he might also understand this. I believe this is partially why he won't make it to presidency because his entire platform seems to run off emotion instead of actual hard policies. I feel he changes his campaign to suit whatever the current heavy left/young people are currently believing. Kind of like if buzzfeed could run for president.

I would say it's about the same. While I do agree more social related fields are heavily in it most of the new hires at my old job for engineering seemed to actually lean pretty left. I think it had a lot to do with like I said, being locked in this echo chamber where it's forced on you or else you are kind of an outsider. This could also occur much more heavily in the U.S than where you live.

I'm not sure either of those words means what you think they mean. Because holy shit.

Eh, honestly not sure they'd be much worse than the old racist douchebags and MAH GUNS N' FREEDUMS blowhards. Honestly the two party system fucked your country from the get go.

Actually the chief issue in my opinion is that we've lost all respect for a little word called "context" and we need to understand that you can't trim down complex ideas to a quick sound byte or meme. You'd be amazed how taking things out of context can work. Hell I've said plenty of super racist/sexist/awful things over the years. And moreso things that could be construed as such. But hell if I'm half as horrible a human being as some of the shit I say makes me sound.

Socialism is a pipe dream. But hey, the only other option is throwing your eggs in the Hillary basket. And....she's neither the politician nor the leader Bill was. I think the memories are pretty fresh of the last time people were trying to elect someone who's sorta connected to a previous president in hopes it'll be a similar administration.

I think there are plenty of open minded conservative leaning people in America. I don't think everyone has to lean super right or super left. I know a few people who are plenty open to new ideas. Not everyone is Donald Trump. I think it's insanely irrational to believe that every conservative is a tea part member or just a babbling racist.

I actually think 30-40 years from now when my peers take office we would actually see some of the most oppressive policies of the recently passed policies.

I think Bernie's campaign can be compared a lot to parts of Obama's. He ran against all kinds of policies saying he would stop them, however once he became president he extended said policies and completely did 180 degree turns on his old statements. I honestly don't think presidents are as influential as the populations themselves. I believe realistically that protests have way more direct cause and effect for our culture than the president does. I don't think presidents or politicians in general can lead culture shifts.

I could just be retarded though, I've never really felt that I'm intelligent and I'm probably too influenced by the documentaries and other shit I read/watch.

A conservative, by definition, is someone who holds traditional (read: conservative) values and is against change. You cannot be both open minded and conservative by definition. It's like being a dry wet-nap or a flame resistant firelog. It's just nonsensical.

My country narrowly avoided open religious oppression with the last election. There was talk of setting up a department of "barbaric cultural practices". Read: anything non-white.

About the only good that would have come of it would be my weekly phone calls about that building full of people who get together every week to look at naked pictures of a baby and then eat and drink human flesh whilst chanting.

In your country the patriot act got a shitload of innocent people locked up without due process where they were summarily tortured for YEARS.

So no, I don't see how this would be worse.

Such as? I don't recall Obama 180-ing on anything he actually had the power to alter.

Guy was a mediator. Problem is no one gets far in american politics by trying to negotiate.

Also yes, I do appreciate the irony that our right leaning party is seriously called the "progressive conservatives"

I don't think conservatives are strictly anti-everything in the states though. I think that realistically they are more for smaller changes than big ones. Like I said though I'm pretty sure I'm retarded so I'm not good at discussing this stuff, mostly just ranting and fucking up my own statements.

Obama was pretty big on his campaign about how whistle-blowers shouldn't be punished for blowing the whistle, then Edward Snowden happened and he completely went against that in public statements, to the point people were pointing it out on his campaign site. He was pretty big about shutting down QuatBay but he hasn't really done anything major at all to pursue that. He extended a few Bush policies he was against but renamed them as his own pet projects. I'm more Democrat than any other political group but I think it's interesting to see how quickly he shifted after hitting presidency.

I do believe that hearing the Republican party called Conservatives and the Democrat party called Progressives has made me use the terms more loosely than you would like, which I'm sorry about. It makes it easier to push off the point that I'm struggling to convey, once again I'm not that bright.

Their major platform is basically "let's undo the last 8 years of Obama" with loads of "Hey, the 50's were pretty sweet right?". I'd hardly call that open to change.

Uh...Snowden ran. Obama pushed for Snowden to return to receive a trial. You know what a fugitive is right? Besides which, the charges go back to before Obama was even born. The Espionage act was WW1 literature. Now if Snowden returns then Obama would have some level of power over freeing him or ensuring a proper trial. But as it stands it's kind of hard to try someone for espionage in absentia. And since the Espionage Act kind of supercedes presidential authority...

RE: Gitmo. Yeah, Obama can't do it.

I'd like to hear more about these acts of which you speak.

Because most republicans are conservatives and most democrats are progressives. There's variations on how it works but it's pretty hard to be a republican but also be open minded when the party basically says "no, it was fine before you broke it". Similarly it's hard to be a close minded democrat when the party is built around "the way shit is? It ain't working. Let's change it".

I don't think it's really that cut and dry in the states. Thanks to the two party system where everyone is practically forced to claim one or the other but can vote how they feel about specific topics.

I don't think it's that simple either. Obama could of easily been way more pro Snowden than he was. I don't think you have much choice but to run when there is no realistic way a government would let you walk free after exposing they are spying on their own civilians in an insanely illegal way.

I also recall Bush's education policies being mentioned somewhere also.

I still don't believe this is the case due to how fucked American politics are. At least once you bubble down to real people and not just the figureheads.
