Controller not working properly using ePSXe

Works:

1. select
2. start
3. analog

Doesn't work:
every other button

I tested the controller in control panel > devices > twin usb joystick > game controller settings. When I move the joysticks, the window lights up with activity. Same for select and start buttons, circle 9 and 10 light up. However, all the other buttons don't seem to register when I press them (d-pad, X, O, Square, Triangle, L1, R1, L2, R2).

One interesting thing is that buttons 1,2,3,4,6,8 are already lit up as if they're pressed already. Here's a screenshot when I'm not pressing anything

I know the adapter and controller aren't broken because I have used both in the past to play ISOs on the ePSXe

I'm using version 1.7.0 but I don't think this is a problem because the last time I played it was 3 years ago and my controller's buttons all worked

While I wait for replies, I'll try testing whether the adapter has become defective or the PS2 controller has broken down over the years. I will use my friend's adapter and controller to do this test and will post updates.
