    Question Inquiry about bad dumps on the main site

    I want to ask a few questions/have a discussion about the condition of isos/roms found on the main site. Not limiting this to any particular system.

    1. I was wondering if the main site has any bad dumps/isos/roms and if so what ones are they? How many are there? Do some systems have more than others or is it limited to just some systems? (If anyone wants to, I would appreciate a list of all bad dumps/isos/roms found on the site or any info/links related to this)

    2. Where do the isos/roms found on the main site come from? Are they a combination of scene releases and forum member uploads? Are these suppliers responsible for or related to any potential bad dumps/isos/roms?

    3. What is a bad dump/iso/rom, what is wrong with them and what does this affect? Why do they exist? How can I identify bad dumps/isos/roms and are there any fixes/tools to make them good?

    4. Now for something specific, I want to know more about multi-track games. I know that some multi-track games can have up to 18 tracks and they are more complex to deal with. Can a multi-track game be emulated "as is" or does it need to converted to something like a single-track game before it will work? Are multi-track games more prone to becoming bad dumps/isos/roms or are they harder to dump/rip?

    Below are some discrepancies of isos/roms data. I have downloaded these games and was wondering if anyone can please explain to me what is wrong with them?
    Are these examples of bad dumps/isos/roms?

    In this case these multi-track games have a single iso file whose size equals it's first track size. Does this mean that they only have their first track and have the others removed?

    5. Lastly, I want to know some more about revisions/update versions like Legend of Zelda, The - Ocarina of Time (USA) (Rev A) or Tales of Destiny 2 (Japan) (v1.01). I want to know what these affect like bug fixes, demos etc. I am aware that it's a case by case basis as each game is affected differently but it is hard to find what exactly is updated with a lot of games that get these revisions/update versions. On the contrary pc games get their patch/update information well publicized and almost all pc games get patches/updates compared to the few console games that get revisions/update versions. Is it more difficult or expensive to do revisions/update versions for console games compared to patches/updates for pc games? Why are revisions/update versions for console games never publicized much? Also I have been looking through the main site and I see Nintendo games have lots of revisions/update versions where as Sony games hardly have any. Does Sony not care about the quality of their games or simply spends less money to support their games as much as Nintendo?

    Jeez thats alot of text.

    Since I'm a redumper I can "try" to answer your questions to the best of my ability.

    The PSX disc images on the main site are very old ECMed images meant for dial up and most are bad when compared to a 1:1 dump.

    Redump images are split only for mixed cd/multi track CDs, this is to ensure easy file checking to make sure each byte of audio data is dumped correctly and for future reference if they are in need of auditing.

    The ECMed PSX images are back before anyone truly knew about data corruption/bad sectors and is in need of a complete update, wonder if MasJ would be up to the task to replace the entire library with redump?

    There is no way to know about Bug Fixes and the like without insider knowledge or just common sense.

    I have a image of Harvest Moon Tree of Tranquility that is the Bug Fixed release, I own both the bugged and Bug Fixed releases and the only way know is the hash is different and the disc label is in color for the Bug Fixed instead of mono green for the Bugged ver.

    So is it just PSX games on the main site that are bad dumps or are other systems games affected as well? Should I only be concerned with bad dumps for PSX games?

    I have been reading around and it seems that lots of multi track games have not been dumped very well and have not been converted very well into single/combined track games (missing some of the tracks, data, audio etc.). Is it just multi track games on the main site that are bad dumps and games that are originally single track (although not redump) being good dumps? Or can both multi/single track games be bad dumps?

    I also hear Redump is the best for Disc images and No-intro is the best for cartridge roms. So are these the ones to go for?

    No, there are sometimes bad dumps for other systems too. We replace them when we're notified. Sometimes it takes years to discover that a certain dump is not right.

    There is a plan to replace the entire PSX set with redump isos. We did GCN first and are working on PSX but these are big projects because a lot of data needs to be replaced and replicated to many servers worldwide.

    Okay, so PSX and other systems on the main site can have bad dumps. What systems on the main site should I be concerned with the most when it comes to bad dumps?

    Specifically for the PSX, is it just multi track games on the main site especially the ones that have been converted into combined track games that are bad dumps? Or does this include all PSX games (i.e. counting single track games as well)?

    The No-intro and Redump sets are both projects with the goal of collecting good dumps of roms and isos for various systems and are used on the main site. What is there available for systems not covered by these projects?

    None. Nigh all "bad" dumps work fine. In certain circumstances and with different usages bad dumps may actually function better than perfect images. The insane quest for perfection has actually caused countless instances of 'throwing the baby out with the bathwater', and these useful bad dumps are lost forever.
    *PSA* Wii Redump collector's can now unscrub ISO files. So scrubbed games can now be verified. You can find the program to do this here

    I never heard of any useful bad dumps being thrown out haphazardly.

    pak88 you need to take it slow in this regard since you are just going to give yourself a stroke with worry.

    It takes time adjusting and understanding all about dumps, be it cartridge or optical based media.

    No need to worry about whats on the main site, if you have questions about what you specifically want il help you .

    Just ask via a VM or PM to make it easier on me and to keep a clean thread.
