I would normally agree, if only because I don't tend to use many desktop icons myself. I think simply changing the wallpaper to something less bright and detailed might make the icons stand out more...

Pretty easy to do using tinypic actually. Just choose say, the 640x480 resize option when uploading it, post that, then upload it again...
