I only take it off when I'm using it and the console doesn't stay in standby or anything (console and ext HDD are turned off on power board).

Oh yeah and increase settlement size mod plus mod to manually remove extra stuff from settlement (grass and heaps of other crap).
I had those running at the same time and put turrets everywhere...

Oh yeah there are some spots like that in story that can trigger crash to dash or freeze.
