I had a friend that would read random books from various series out of order.
I'm sure it's okay as a standalone game though. I liked 999 but have not gotten around to play VLR yet.

Definitely Star Ocean 3 then. Maybe Magna Carta.
Hope you enjoy them.
What kind of RPGs do you like most?
Rogue Galaxy, Radiata Stories. Those are some heavy hitters with wide appeal.
Bangai-O, Resident Evil Code Veronica, D2, Elemental Gimmick Gear, Skies of Arcadia, Headhunter, Illbleed, Last Blade 2, Project Justice, Napple Tale: Arsia in Daydream, Powerstone 1-2, Rez, Sakura...
VB is my favourite of the bunch. All decent tho.
Vanguard Bandits, Saiyuki Journey West, Front Mission 3. Maybe Kartia.
Red/Blue for the Gameboy is a pretty good starting point. Played the shit out of those.
Gold/Silver, Ruby/Sapphire and Emerald are all fine. I don't think I've played anything newer than that but...
NCAA Football 12.
Seriously though, you won't be disappointed with Uncharted. Shooting sequences are not difficult.
Also recommend Valkyria Chronicles, Disgaea 3-4 and Folklore.
...
I'd second everything KS said 'cept World Ends With You.
Also I'd recommend these (trying to keep this list short).
Etrian Odyssey (DS)
Lunar Silver Star Story (PS1)
Lunar 2 Eternal Blue...
Yeah, that might make it difficult.
I'd say Disgaea then, it's really fun.
I'm sure it's already on here but if it's a poor rip or is on some really shitty host I can rip mine and up it...
I'd start with Valkyria Chronicles. It has some other gameplay elements but it's a great game imho.
^
Most of the Langrisser games were never brought over and I can't remember which received fan translations.
Also Tactics Ogre for sure.
PS2: Disgaea 1-2, Makai Kingdom, Phantom Brave, Soul...
Yeah, a lot of good rpgs have random encounters. Comes with the territory.
Also, most JRPGs are going to be on the "anime side".
Anyway, it has random encounters but I recommend SMT:...
Yeah, I was wanting to give him a solid base and included all my ps1 favourites. Figured he could look into each game and figure out if he wanted to play it.
I'm not a fan of Vagrant Story but...
I'll second both of these. My only issue with LoD was that even for when it was made it was a walking cliche. The plot moves were all very predictable. That didn't stop me from enjoying it but it's...
I like anything to do with mystery usually. Not quite a visual novel but the Eve series is pretty good. I don't know if any have been translated.
There are a ton I could recommend for Dreamcast...
:dread:
Anyway, you don't have many options broski. This is mostly a console genre. I could get you a huge list if you wanted to emulate.
Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel, Jagged...
Yes. Some of these are in the "RPG elements" group, but all still good games.
Shining Force
Shining Force II
Shining in the Darkness
Landstalker
Shadowrun
Beyond Oasis
Crusader of Centy
↓
Golden Sun was okay.
I also recommend Yggdra Union, Riviera, and even though they aren't rpgs the Castlevania GBA games are all excellent.
Well I mean, you can count the number of RPGs released in English for the Dreamcast on one hand. Skies of Arcadia is probably the best one.
Also, NWN is great, plus there are so many good custom...
Well if you like RPGs you should definitely enjoy them. DQ8 is probably the best of the lot, I'd start on that.
Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King
Radiata Stories
Rogue Galaxy
Xenosaga 1-3
I've never played R&C but furries and shooting came to mind so you might try out Conker's Bad Fur Day for the N64. If someone that knows what they are talking about wants to come slap me I'm cool...
The first 2 fallouts are really good. If you haven't played them you really should, I just assumed you had since you mentioned the third.
He did say good. Good narrows it down. A lot.
