For the most part you just have to tinker with the settings within the emulator, so that's what it probably is..

As for what you said how your friends computer did the same thing ( black screen )...

The actual console ( DS lite ) can play gba games because it has a slot for it, but the emulators do not have that ability.

As for the BIOS, if you don't dump it, google "PCSX2 BIOS...

.gcm is a Gamecube extension, it's normal to find games with this, as for your Direct3D problem, make sure your graphics card is up-to-date as well as "directx" software. Mine plays fine on direct3D....

Desmume is a Nintendo DS emulator, last I saw it can't run anything but NDS roms. ( And a lil homebrew )
But no GBA,GBC roms.
