So I downloaded that massive archive of ROMs with the intention of thumbing through it and trying out games that sound interesting. However, when I opened it up, the ROMs had oddly abbreviated names, like btimem (Burger Time) and bublboblr (Bubble Bobble). This makes it extremely difficult to know what game is what without just unpacking and playing every one. I don't really know what kind of help to ask for, but does anyone have any suggestions?
put all the roms in the roms folder and use something like IV/Play (it's a front end for mame) that will list all the games in the roms folder with the full name or use a gui port of mame like MameUI

http://www.progettosnaps.net/mameui/ A collection of all new and old versions of MAMEUI (handy if you need an older version that matches the rom set you have also has the latest version both 32 bit and 64 bit)
Both of those you can get screen shot images for and history dat files and other support files that will give more information on the games you have
