What deems a "worthy" charity?

So, ive paid off pretty much the bulk of my debt and what not, and since ive started 11 hour shifts, my double time pay out has well, given me a good start, so much so, i think it would only be right if i give back.

But here lies the problem, what deems a charity "worthy"?
I mean its all well and go to donate a research fund, and many people would benefit from the research, if something was discovered, but when you look at charities that deal with low income family's, the money would help them more in the "Here and now"
But there is the risk that they MIGHT blow it on retarded stuff (Not likely, but it can happen...)

What do you deem worthy? And why.

It gets disheartening because it begins to appear that impoverished factions become a profitable commodity for seemingly benign organizations. The first time I started to question their methods was when I read a book called Ismael about a talking gorilla who related to his human protege the reality that supporting a starving population and helping it to grow in an area that cannot support any more human life is just going to make the situation much worse in the long run, (as uncomfortable as those implications may be.)

But if you give from the goodness of your heart, (regardless of the recipient,) it will help you more than anyone else, and will be much more rewarding than any shiny, sexy glossy black thing that you could purchase for yourself. That is just my opinion.

its a matter of opinion but as long as they are giving to the sick or poor i consider it a charity, when they give it to help the gov't build a building or something...then i dont count it a charity

I usually donate to something that helps sick kids. The company that I work for has a charity called the President's Choice Children's Charity, where the money raised is used to help out in-need kids in towns where a one of our supermarkets are located. The one in my town has helped retrofit houses for wheelchair accessibility, or helped purchase handicap vans, or helped with the added expenses of a child with leukemia, etc, just to name a few. Whenever we do a fundraiser at work, or they offer some sort of specialty deal which benefits the charity (I picked up a bunch of tokens that can be used in the shopping carts for $2 each. They attach to your key chain and you never have to worry about having any change on you when you go shopping, among a bunch of other "in-store" things, like purchasing a PCCC T-Shirt and being allowed to wear jeans to work on Fridays, etc).

I find stuff like that to be a worthy cause, and is where most of my charitable donations go to. Usually, anything that benefits kids, I like to help out.

Almost all things that you could really consider a charity will be "worthy." The most important part is finding one that you have some kind of personally connection to.

For example, if I had a relative suffering from some disease or disability, I would consider a charity working to either benefit people with that disease/disability or research ways to benefit them as more worthy of my dollar.

Like Cola said, any charity that you can connect with is the right one for you.
My family donates regularly to an organization that gives poor kids hospitalization that can't take care of themselves when the ER tells them to fuck off.
My sister had a horrible accident and would have died without them so that's why we chose that one. It's just all about your connection to said charity.

Like the idea of charity is fine, and you think you're doing the right thing, but not all the money goes to the people in need IIRC, a bulk of the money goes to directors paid staff, and even TV ads and promotions.

I agree that charity is worthy, but i PERSONALLY dont think that sending money over to africa to help people over there, is all that important.
While its only a $1 a day, and that money really helps them, i just feel like i should be helping out at home, and not abroad.
Much the same with animal ones, while i love animals, i dont think there's much justification to throw money there.

The only one i could really see that would effect me would be a depression.

Since ive moved here, if seen so many more homeless people, more then ive ever seen, we had stuff all in Melbourne, yet im lucky to walk a block and not see one.

I dont know if its the need to see that the money is going to some charity director, Drageuth's charity where you get to see or hear about the good shit is great, and thats what i think is "worthy" i mean research is a good cause, but if you dont see anything in your life time, was it worth it?

Would you rather help the here and now, or maybe help millions in the years to come?

if your going to give away money give it to me...in this day and age everyones a penny pincher u should save up cuz when retirement comes and your short that 3k u gave away youll be pissed....

If his retirement is dependent on $3,000, then he's done something else wrong in his life. Considering the estimate right now is that in order to retire and maintain your standard of living through your retirement years, you should have approximately one million dollars in retirement savings, pension income and personal savings, etc... yeah, $3,000 isn't going to break his bank account. :P

Is there a fund for education of underprivileged kids?That seems like a worthy cause,it helps poor people,also prevents them from
spending the money on useless stuff and you get to see the results in your lifetime.

I do question/caution the generosity though. Despite Kefka's apparent disregard for punctuation & the English language, I'd agree with him. Being stingy might bode well for the future.

Civil construction my friend, 3 year contract that will blow out to maybe 5 years.
Project manager for one of the biggest construction mobs is my uncle (Well Zoe's uncle), the 2IC under Zoe's uncle has taken it on himself to make him my mentor, basicly, anyone in power knows who i know, so they suck up and help me because Zoe's uncle told them to.
After the job ends, theres a 10 year contract to maintain the road/tunnel we are building, needless to say, im doing a trainee ship in Major road construction AND maintenance, wink wink.

X amount of money is paid into my super fund every week, then an extra X amount is paid ontop of that as a "goodwill" token from them company, but its in the EBA.

Im not a total tool in regards to money, i already have a rental property and im only 26 years old.

Dont get me wrong, i work for it, this aint no office job.....
My current pay rate is based on a Trainee wage, once i get my tickets to drive machines, it will increase, i think the current wage for a Grader driver is 150 an hour.

But yeah, its just a case of, we always got by as a family, dad worked hard at a power station, we were never poor, i was somewhat strapped for cash when i left home, but now im not and i think its only right to give back, i get the money back at tax time, but thats not the point.

EDIT: Forgot, i let Zoe pick a place to donate to, she picked the RSPCA so they will help animals, im still undecided, she suggested a depression one, i like the idea, but still tough choice....

EDIT 2: im almost 100% sure our school system is free here, well public school that is. That or we just never paid for it LOL.

RSPCA isn't a bad place to give. School in Aus is mostly free. Yes its paid by the Govt. & Education dept, but I think most family's pay a very nominal fee of sorts.

You could always donate to Lifeline Australia if thats what you want to donate to. They're usually always strapped for cash.

Fell into the job, but im not the kind of person that will sit there all day and do nothing because the head guy is the man in charge... which has earn't me the respect of my crew, which is nice.

Up in Brissie, theres alot of pets just tossed out and left for themselfs, i almost ended up bringing a kitten home from work, but weirdly enough the "manliest" guy there ended up finding a home for the little fella. So thats what made me go with the RSPCA.

Yeah schools free, i think you have the option to pay fee's, if you do you get a yearbook, i think this is the case becuase i have my year books up to grade 4, then nothing after LOL.

Taxes pay for it. In the US, each state decides on their own how to fund it. Texas does so by taking a percentage of homeowners' property tax.

In Australia, it may be the case that only families with children have to pay the necessary taxes, but I think it's most likely that they just take it out of your taxes without you knowing about it.

Personally what I deem as a worthwhile charitable cause is around my own area (maybe a span of 25 - 30 miles). If I had the extra money I would help out those charitable causes around mine own town. Give back to the community that has helped me a time or two.

Donations over $2 are refunded to you at tax time.
When i was younger, i had minimal money, i had to earn everything i own, my family was never poor, but we were never well off, it was a case of working for it, and working hard.
So why not spread the love to people that are having a hard time, shit i only need like 750 bucks a week to live off, and its not like im going to invest in a pool so i can swim around in my money like a shallow self centred person.
And whats the worst that can happen, i get rid of money now and help others, and its returned to me at tax time...

The tax man rapes me, and rapes me hard...... I think i lose 500 bucks to taxes every week.

If you're unsure about a specific charity to give to, you could always donate some money to soup kitchens or food banks instead of volunteering. There's also the option of buying a bag of food that will last for awhile and giving it to a homeless person that looks like they could use it on the side of the road or downtown or something. It's a bit more time consuming but it's satisfying when you give it to a person and you can tell that it made their day. Something my mom used to like to do. It's good too because some people would buy alcohol/drugs with money but they'll most likely end up eating the food.
