Archive Types and How to Handle Them

I thought I would post this so no one needs to explain archives to people anymore :).

File formats you're likely to encounter on EP:

.7z - A 7Zip archive, this can be opened by WinRAR or 7Zip.
.rar - A WinRAR archive, this can be opened by WinRAR or 7Zip.
.r00 - This is the old multi-archive extension used by WinRAR. WinRAR will open it without issue.
.zip A Zip archive, this can be opened by WinRAR, 7Zip, or Windows.

.001 A Split file, this can be opened by WinRAR (not in all cases), 7Zip, PeaZip, or HJSplit. Any file can be split with HJSplit, PeaZip, or 7Zip, this means ISOs, WinRAR archives, Executables, anything. Renaming it will NOT help because you need to join the file.
Another thing to watch out for is associating archive programs with disc images. Make sure you uncheck ISO in the WinRAR associations list.


Just follow the steps below depending on the archive type.

Extracting files with 7Zip:

Select the first piece of the archive

Choose where to extract the files

You can also extract by right-clicking and selecting 7Zip in the context menu

Combining split files with 7Zip:

Open 7Zip
Select the .001 file
Right-click and select 'Combine Files'

Choose the file path and click OK

Once it finishes combining the pieces you are done.
If a RAR archive has been split with HJS (or 7Zip) you need to extract from the archive once it is combined.

Extract To is the same as WinRAR or 7Zip, you choose the location instead of extracting to the same folder as the archive

Both WinRAR, PeaZip, and 7Zip are integrated into the context menu (right click) when they are installed. That means you can right-click and choose the same options without opening either program. If you need me to explain what a function on any of the programs does, post, post I say!

ok i saw on another post you link to this thread and sorry for reviving a thread that hasn't had any new post in 4 months i already new all this as i think most of us do i think you need to add ecm to the list as that is the 1 people seem to have the most problem with even though on all the files with ecm i've downloaded there's a link to the program to un ecm i also think this should be a sticky.

We already have a tutorial for dealing with ECM files.

so, if the parts are in ISO format how do I combine them with 7zip?

Or, after I re-read the thread, if an ISO is a disk image, can they be combined? I'm very new to emulation and have a 6 part game and I'm completely lost as how to install/use/play the game.

You need to extract the ISO. Could you post a link to the thread you got the game from?

Thanks for the tutorial and everything, but when I right click I don't get the combine files option. (and yes I already have 7zip) Could it be because all the parts are jZip files?
Never mind. I followed some instructions on .rar files but I still can't get it to work, mybe it's just broken.

just hit extract or extract here, it automaictly reads all the other parts providing they are in the same folder using either 7-zip or winRAR

If both fail just use the Jzip prog from www.jzip.com never heard of it until now so don't ask me how to use it

Need a hand here. I've downloaded a few files, and they're mostly named something like this game.part1.rar , game.part2.rar, game.part3.rar, game.part4.rar when I've downloaded the all the files related to the rom(s) in question. I extract the first file (game.part1.rar for bad example) and extract it (using 7-zip) to a folder I created to store said files. The first game.part1.rar file extracted into the folder is game.iso. Now I open up the second file named game.part2.rar and try to extract it, however it is named the exact same thing (game.iso) and I'm prompted to wether or not I want replace the existing file with the new one. Should I be renaming these files or something? Also, could the 7-zip program just be smarter than me (wouldn't be too far fetched, seriously) in that it already IS combining these .rar files for me? I ask that because it seems strange that each and every one of the files (of the set) is now containing the combined size of all the files put together into a single .iso.

Extract the first part and 7zip will extract all parts of the split archive.

What Deadlegion said is correct, extract from the first piece and 7Zip does the rest. There is no need to extract the same file multiple times.

(please bare with me, this split rar files is fairly new to me) just so I have I this right, I need only extract the content(s) of the first game.part1.rar file and 7zip will do everything else? I've been having some trouble (unrelated note) with various games working. I'll have to try different uploaders of some of these games. So far I've only been able to get 2 out of 8 games to play, 1 of the 8 games (def jam fight for NY) will load but right before I start a match/level it craps out on me and just hangs still, the other 5 games only give me a black screen with no sound.

Yes, only extract the first part.......7zip will extract the whole split archive automatically itself.
As for your other questions.......they may be emulation problems (if emulating) or perhaps disc burning issues (if using a real console)...........with hardly any info about what you are trying to play/what platform it's difficult to guess really :shrug:


Edit: Ok, I've seen your thread in Everything Emulation > Sony systems about def jam fight for NY........hopefully you can get that sorted out there ;)

i wish i had found this a few months ago when i first came across .001 files, took me about a week to figure out to do it the lobg way round in winrar. great post.

I have been having problems extracting files. I get an error message. I have tried to unecm them etc, and nothing works. 7zip said it does not recognize the archive type. It is not an isolated incident. It has happened with several games now, and I am no noob at this either. I amtrying to extract PS2 iso files. I tried red ded revolver, dark cloud 2, and recently god of war.

You forgot to tell us what file formats you are working with and the exact links to the files you are having problems with

Usually you just right click on the first file of a series if it's a multi part archive and hit extract here from the 7-zip menu

If it's a single file archive you do the same thing

Do not open the archive with 7-zip just go directly to the extract here option of 7-zip from a right click
