I am considering getting a PSP, either a 2nd hand one or possibly new. Without knowing beforehand which version the PSP will be, can I buy a copy of Lumines (seen one on Ebay) and use it to install a custom firmware on any version PSP?
I know there are threads regarding PSP exploits, but I haven't seen one that answers my question.

Only works with the original PSP, provided I'm not horribly wrong here.
The only method of downgrading a slim PSP is the Pandora method, so don't go for that unless if you know someone with a downgraded PSP.
Lumines is an easy method though, its how I did it. There're even self installer packs which can be done in a few clicks, just google around for them.
It won't work on slims coz all slims come with Official Sony firmware v3.60 and the Lumines "loop hole" was fixed in 3.51. :)Quote:

Ok, so it would seem a better bet to get a 2nd hand fat PSP that should be a low enough firmware to exploit with Lumines.
If I had the PSP with the correct firmware, how difficult is it to use the Lumines exploit? What steps would I have to go through to achieve a modified system?
You find a site with the autoinstaller, you open it, click the drive your PSP memory stick is set at, then click install. You'll need the 1.50 official firmware, the 3.50 official firmware and the M33 firmware I believe, but this might come with the auto-installer.Quote:

To go to 3.71 you need to first have 3.52 M33-3 or 3.52 M33-4, 'cos Dark Alex couldn't get round a few bugs. So it will take a while, although I don't really think there's much 3.71 has that 3.52-4 doesn't have (XMB changing is all I know really).Quote:

Right, I'm not following very well.
Can someone tell me in basic steps how to take an unmodified psp (I presume it has to be phat although slim as well if possible) using the Lumines exploit what software I will need (links if possible can be through PMs) and end up with a psp with the most stable custom firmware to date.

Thanks for your help Astaroth, but I haven't followed the psp scene, so it's all a bit confusing atm. I was looking for a tut that tells me what to do and what software to get rather than a youtube link which I have to keep replaying. The sites I have looked at all assume you know which version firmware and motherboard you have stating that the exploit doesn't work on certain combinations...:shrug: I wont know this until I pick up a 2nd hand psp.
Edit: I have now bought a cheap phat psp v2.81. I have successfully downgraded to v1.5 using the Lumines exploit. I now need help updating to a newer custom firmware e.g. Dark_AleX's 3.71 M33 and help on how to run ISO's from the memory stick...

Get the 3.52 release, and it'll come with the installation notes, so its easy enough. When thats done, go for the 3.52-4 update, which again will have notes.
When you have that installed you get the 3.71 updater, and get 3.71-3 if you want.
When you've done that, enter Recovery Mode (turn on PSP while holding R) and find the option to turn off UMD detect or whatever its called, or ISOs wont run.
Now, I think you put ISOs in PSP=>Game=>ISO, but I'm not sure, I haven't used it in a while. PM me if you need anything else, I'll just hunt around a bit.

I am currently on ver 3.52 M33-4. I have tried a Sonic ISO that Sprung uploaded, everything seems fine. Is there any major difference upgrading to 3.71 M33?

Don't forget to select "Sony NP9660" in the UMD MODE in the recovery menu for 100% No UMD compatibility ;)
