Music in 2007
Well for me I suppose "Fear of a blank planet" from Porcupine Tree was a good offering. I did like Kekal's "The Habit of Fire". Though I've not had too much time to think about it, I would be able to come up with more in time. Thoughts from yourselves?

Loosely related to this topic. I am thinking about going to see Off The Wall when they pass through the UK in 08.

Highlights for me were Sonata Arctica, Elvenking, Porcupine Tree and Opeth methinks. All fantastic albums. Ulver's new release is pretty kick ass too.
Megadeth and Helloween were disappointments, shame really, 'cos they were the two I was most excited about.

Best album: Circa Survive - On Letting Go

Guilty pleasure of the year (album): Fall Out Boy - Infinity on High (come on guys, it's not that bad really)
Guilty pleasure of the year (song): Rihanna & Jay-Z - Umbrella
The "Please die and/or stop hurting my ears" award: Avenged Sevenfold
I'm a retard and still haven't to listened to: Arcade Fire - Neon Bible, Rilo Kiley - Under the Blacklight, New Pornographers - Challengers, Shins - Wincing the Night Away (to be fair I can't actually find half of these albums to buy and I don't want to download them)
-
I can only think of Queens of the Stone Age and Modest Mouse right now.

Sixth best album: Digital Shades, Vol. 1 by M83

United Abominations gets album of the year for me.

Oh yeah Icky Thump and In Rainbows are amazing.

From the perspective of a deranged metalhead:
Disappointments of the Year: Megadeth - United Abominations, Behemoth - The Apostasy.
Neither were outright bad, just pedestrian releases from bands that have done much better. Nile gets a pass because I didn't actually expect much from them this time round.
Surprises of the Year: Deathspell Omega - Fas Ite, Maledicti, in Ignem Aeternum. Darkestrah - Epos.
Everyone expected the new DSO to be good but I doubt anyone expected them to go from dissonant black metal to a more tech-death style. Darkestrah, who've shown promise over their last two albums, finally got their shit togther and released a single track that could well stand as one of the best metal concept albums in a long time.
Debut Album of the Year: Sarpanitum - Despoilment of Origin
This is as good as the new Behemoth and Nile albums should have been. Brutal, technical and memorable.
Albums of the Year: Tough call, I'm going to say:
Benighted - Icon
65daysofstatic - The Destruction of Small Ideas
Darkestrah - Epos
Dalek - Abandoned Language
Orange Goblin - Healing Through Fire

Hmmm I have to say the most expected but one of the not so great albums of the year, Lead Sails Paper Anchor by atREYU, I can't really think of a favorite album for last year since I didn't listen to many from 07. A good album was The Smashing Pumpkins, Zeitgeist, I went to see them in concert, amazing, except for the fat chick next to me, only fat person there and took up the entire seat, even while standing up.
-
The new Incubus and Foo Fighters album were amazing as well.

Most Surprising Album: Mekong Delta - Lurking Fear
Who would've thought that thrash scene could ever come out with anything resembling fresh after 1990? Lurking Fear takes everything I loved about Mekong Delta and multiplies it tenfolds. Spanish break in thrash? You bet your ass and it works in flying colors. If any thrash listener needs a change of pace from the usual stuff, this is the album to pick.
Disappointments Of The Year:Concept Of God - Visions
They had everything in their favour yet they still managed to fuck things up. When you have Robert Lowe handling vocals, you're very much guaranteed success, but you can still fuck it up with poor song structures and guitars.
Albums Of The Year: Candlemass - King Of The Gray Islands & Akercocke - The Antichrist
Really great albums from both bands. Candlemass captured the doom essence perfectly, and Akercocke showed us just what type of band Opeth wanted to be. High quality albums from both.
Great/Worthwhile Albums of 2007:
Megadeth - United Abominations
Dream Theater - Systematic Chaos
Evoken - A Caress Of The Void
Nile - Ithyphallic
Pig Destroyer - Phantom Limb
The Morningside - The Wind, The Trees And The Shadows Of The Past
Moonsorrow - V - Havitetty
Helloween - Gambling With The Devil
Machine Men - Circus Of Fools
Primordial - To The Nameless Dead
Uaral - Lamentos A Poema Muerto

According to the list of albums I've made throughout this year, I still got... 47 albums left (and growing) before I'm done listening to albums I want to listen to in 2007.
So far, the three that has impressed me the most is Municipal Waste - The Art of Partying, Symphony X - Paradise Lost and Sigh - Hangman's Hymn. No surprises for me so far, sadly. The only real disappointments I've had so far this year is Behemoth - The Apostasy (it's not terrible, but I know they can do A LOT better than that), Sonata Arctica - Unia (they'll never top Silence, but their previous two albums where a lot better than this) and Vintersorg - Solens Rötter (as Behemoth, this isn't bad, but it really fades when compared to, say, The Focusing Blur).
-
radiohead- in rainbows
in the face of war - we make our own luck
the only two really matter in my opinion.
-
Atreyu - Lead Sails and A Paper Anchor.
Kamelot - Ghost Opera.
Dream Theater - Systematic Chaos.
Nightwish - Dark Passion Play.
Gotta be more, but can't remember at the moment.
Lead Sails and a Paper Anchor was real good. A nice change from their previous music style. I liked it.
The others, could have done better, previous albums were better.
