New copyright inducement rules? Senate Bill 2560

I was watching the news (fox, even though i hate there biasness..(thats not a word i know)) and they were talking about Senate Bill 2560 that if passed, because of the way it was worded, it could cause the Ipod to be Illegal, as well as other new Tech like Tivo, and some older things like VCRS..

At first i did not see what they are talking about, but then I saw the phrase

... thats almost an open door. I guess the you can reasonably say that the ipod can be used to copy music illegal from you computer to your pod.

Has anyone else heard anything about this? What do you think.

I don't fully understand what it says from the words there. I just know that there are ppl trying to make it hard to even have legitamate backups of your own copywrited material. I think that if a law like this passes you will have countless numbers of consumers and manufacturers angry. I doubt that it passes.

Thankfully, before a bill becomes a law there are several areas of approval it'll have to meet. Since it's rare that everyone agrees on a bill, I doubt it will pass as it would actually hurt commercial businesses. Once you make things too restrictive everything falls apart and people care less about who they are ripping off since, they themselves feel that they are being robbed of their rights.

You'd have to remove all types of digital audio devices from millions of stores and confiscate them from millions of customers. Just how the fuck are they going to accomplish that? They should've thought of it before letting the little suckers out on sale.
I'm saving up to buy a 40GB model of an iPod, I hope I can make it in time. :D
Btw, the iPod is not necessarily illegal. I mean, it even comes with software to buy music. What about iTunes? As well as many other sites in which you buy songs online? Don't tell me they want to see the receipt for every fucking song you own, that's just utterly ridiculous.
If recording industries priced music albums reasonably, maybe all those millions of people wouldn't be tempted to "steal" them.

When recordable BETA and VHS tapes came out. Sony actually tried to prohibit them. Then when they found out they could cash in, they didn't care. Just an interesting fact on how things eventually end up :P

well if they do make ipods and VCR's illegal they will have to ban CD-R's CD burners CD players anything because it has the potential of being used for illegal copies of things

I think the way the bill is worded now, it could make any thing that can be made to copy things illegal, including copymachines.

Of course i dont think that it will pass as its writen now, but it does have bi-partisan suport, so you never know. Those elected officals sure are crazy.

Seriously, what's a small loss worth to such huge recording companies? Protests don't seem to be working... it's time to take the fight against the RIAA on a whole new level.

I don't want to be a terrorist. I truly doubt this law could pass. It would hurt too much business like they said. What basis would they have to say an iPod is illegal? I mean you bought (or should have bought) the music that you play on it. You are just taking your CDs and putting them onto another device that will still be owned by you. If you are the only person that can use that music why does it matter to the companies that you have 2.3 copies of music that you bought?

Well i guess those companys want the royalties from those other copys you have made.

lol ive been in the getting free stuff days for ages, not only wont it get passed, but even if it did, just hide your stuff lol, i ahve all my isos/ roms and other junk in multiple folder sin 1 folder and all abcked up on cd, if i chose i can delete them all and bring them back lol so no bigge here lol

It'll never pass. Even if I was in on it, it will never pass. And we all know how everything revolves around me.:P Everything would become illegal. Cds, CD players/burners, VCR tapes, VCRs, DVDs, DVD players/burners, and computers with said items. And we all know that there are pretty old computers that can back up your cassette tapes. So that'll get banned as well. Even the damn record labels that want this to pass will go down, because now we can't buy the damn CDs the albums are pressed on because they can lead to duplication. Fucking idiots.
