i just got dealt 8 3 for the 4th time in this tournament, and it's only been going for a half hour
I just beat Afraid of Monsters: Director's Cut.
FUCKING AWESOME.
By far the scariest game I've ever played, for one, and ruMpel, the guy that made it, followed the do's and don't's of fucking with the player very well; The mod isn't 100% pitch black every second of every level, but rather some areas are very dark, some areas are lit, a good number of areas switch back and forth, and overall balances well. You never got the aggravated feeling of relying on darkness games like Doom 3 have, but it managed to be very scary and dark nonetheless unlike most other horror, which was a great accomplishment. The first level is mainly devoid of actual enemies, just scares, until you reach a point where you have to cut power to the building to get by an obstacle, and suddenly everything's gone dark and monsters are popping out of the woodwork, and it quickly induced me to a panicked flee through the building trying to get back to where I'm supposed to go. After the first level, the number of lighter environments increase, and the difficulty and intensity comes down, but it remains no less scary by introducing new freakout enemies and scary encounters. As a whole it took me about 4 or 5 hours to beat, and felt quite long for a mod. Turns out there are 4 different endings too. I didn't exactly get a good one, though at least my character survived, so I'm going to replay it tomorrow night. According to the installer seeing endings has direct effects on the game, changing certain things, which sounds pretty fucking awesome, if you ask me. :D
