Gather round kids, I'm gonna tell ya a story bout the scariest kind of game. Back when I was young we didnt have no dang youtube or internet. The only way to judge a game was by pictures in magazines or on the back of the box. If you purchased a game and it sucked ass, well that was just too bad cuz lots a policies wouldn't allow ya ta return it for ya money back.
Nope, ya just had to learn to like it. And the scariest game of this type I ever experienced was Lagoon for SNES. Till this day the thought of it makes me dry heave. But then there was hope. Games became rentable. And that was the best way to avoid getting locked into a frustrating boredom contract.
Also, playing the original Fatal Frame by yourself in the dark is pretty fucking creepy. I think a lot of it has to do w/ the sounds and the main characters slow moving pace, almost like one of those dreams when your running but you feel like your barely moving forward.

The atmosphere, the sound, the feeling of being alone and having only 1 weapon or none at all.
