It's not really silent in the same way that, say, the "B" in "subtle" is silent. There are almost no true silent letters in Japanese, and the language is pretty much entirely phonetic. Still, it's true that it can often become devoiced when it occurs at the end of words, and it's standard practice to do so in Tokyo Japanese (the sort of Japanese you'll probably be learning as a foreign speaker). It's not true of all regions or of everyone's accent, though. I've met Japanese people who pronounce the "u" at the end of words quite strongly. ^^;;;

Btw, try to stay optimistic geeze and I'm sure find a way for yourself. I've been stressed as well, even considered suicide (in fact, starting to study Japanese was one of the things that got my mind off that), but really, always try to look on the bright side and make the most of your situation.

I can read and write French okay. I don't really have much confidence when it comes to speaking it because I've never really tried, and I know that my pronunciation is probably completely atrocious as a result. ^^;;;

I could read the first part with rikaichan but I got stuck at "まり酷くない". Granted, I don't know any grammer and just vaguely understand what a sentence mean even if I know all the words as a result.
