And he's a good choice for you.
Doesn't have projectiles, so you will focus more on attacking head on.
Playing as a character with projectiles tends to make you rely on them too much, forgetting that Just Defends exist, and most players, I included, can perform them 70% of the time.

Next thing you will want to consider, is T.O.P placement.
Since Freeman lacks good defense options, and you don't know how to Just Defend frequently, I would place it either at the start of the lifebar, or at the end.

Another thing you need to fix, is your Just Defend issues.
Just Defending can stop 80% of pokes, you just need to know your options.

Next thing is, work on how to punish moves.
