You could also go for a used "gaming" laptop. Sometimes you can get a pretty decent deal on laptops but you need to be absolutely certain on the specs because the product lines are a mess. A prebuilt with a decent configuration could also work (though the usual is going to suck with that, PSU, case, HDD/SSD).
I don't think I want to go with another laptop. I was thinking a pre-built anyway but I've been out of it for a long time now so I don't know what to look for or what kind of price point to start saving for.Quote:

did a little looking at newegg on prebuilts. I looked at ryzen 7 and intel I7 the ryzen was much more than an intel by $200-$300. I also looked at some refurbs they're running $175 at the cheapest I didn't look at ryzen 9's or I9's.
it gives me a basic idea of prices on pre-builts.

I still say for a budget a used Xbox One S and a Game pass subscription is right up your alley. They have all the Fallout games (albeit vanilla) Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyim (including the anniversary edition coming soon) All of the Doom games are on there (including Doom64) Plus classics like Rare replay, indies, AAA games and garbage titles too lol.
You can hook up a mouse and keyboard for youtube and other internet stuffs too.
Just plug it in and play.
Not being a fanboy here, like me money is a big concern and I just think this is a pretty good solution.

On a budget a console is probably better value, right now anyway. Unless you're unlucky and something goes horribly wrong with hardware, you can resell everything.
PC is good, but you need to spend a lot and be pretty lucky finding the right parts cheap atm.
Reselling games isn't a huge deal, at least over here (I would be surprised if the US is any different).
You don't even need to go the ebay/CL or whatever route.
The likes of EB Games never give good trade value, but JB Hi-Fi generally does.
I've bought PS4 games in the past (on sale, new, random sources) and then traded within a year. Sometimes I've lost a few dollars, but generally not lost anything with those trades and even made money on some occasions :shrug:
I'm just thinking now probably isn't the right time to be building a budget PC for gaming.
