I think the first game I bought with my own money was crash bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back. I had just gotten a playstation 1 from my cousin (I was like 6 or 7); I went to gamestop and said I wanted a game like Mario. Obviously I had no idea what I was talking about since there is no such thing as mario for playstation, so the guy suggested Crash and I loved it.
