Every single person with 600 bucks in their pocket should buy a PS3, what kind of question is this? :wacko:
Now seriously, if you can spend the money and you like the games, go ahead, otherwise, if these first games or the price are not too appealing, wait till the price is cut off or till it receives some more good games.
[b]The reason that many of the multiplatform games aren't looking as good on the PS3 right now is because even the developers admitted that they just made the game for 360 and ported it as quickly as possible without utilizing the cell at all. Kojima has stated on numerous accounts in his blog and such that he plans to use more then 9GB and really loves the amount of freedom he has with BD. I have even read a quote somewhere that making the game multiplatform would mean sacrificing parts of the game so it could work on the 360. The 360 doesn't have the analog face buttons, and that is a feature that MGS games use extensively./[b]Quote:

Blu-Ray and UMD are two COMPLETELY different markets. While the UMD format was just for PSP and only for on the go, Blu-ray is to replace DVD as the MAIN home viewing format. I can't understand how you can compare the two. In fact nearly every CE company supports Blu-Ray including HP. Well, while the picture may be slightly better than DVD on a standard-definition TV, the only way to justify that particular aspect of the console depends entirely on whether or not one owns a TV capable of getting the most out of it. A slightly-better-than DVD picture isn't worth it, so you'll have to spring for an HDTV as well. While they aren't expensive these days, if you don't have one going into this, you're going to drop some extra cash on top of the initial purchase of the console in order to make the most of the Blue Ray player.
It's not a big deal if you have the cash, but it's something to consider if Blue-Ray really matters.
Look at this link, which essentially says that it's too close to tell who's winning the format war, but that it would seem that HD-DVD is doing better based on sales of stand-alone players vs Blue-Ray players. It does go on to say that analysts predict that Blue-Ray will become the industry standard due to the amount of content available for players, but analysts say alot of things, and much of it turns out to be completely wrong. Regardless of their future-telling abilities or lack thereof, basically what I'm getting at is that Blue Ray isn't at all outselling HD DVD by any wide margin, if at all. Unless you have sources that are newer than 15 days old, and that paint an entirely different picture.
As for exclusives, trotting them out doesn't really mean anything, when one considers UMD. That was widely supported at first, only to see support drop off once it became clear that noone gave a shit about the format. This is something that is in the public's mind, if not that of the studios, who seem to be supporting the format largely because they put alot of faith in Sony's ability to put Blue-Ray players into people's homes through the trojan horse that is the PS3. If sales remain slow, or stagnate altogether, then I wouldn't be suprised to see studios stop releasing content for the format, just like they have with UMD.
I know that the ONLY movie studio not supporting Blu-Ray at all is Universal, and that is because they signed a contract to only produce for HD-DVD. Disney, and it's studios, are Blu-Ray EXCLUSIVE. People follow the format with the movies, and so far the amount of Blu-Ray releases exceed the HD-DVD releases.Quote:

BluRay is going down for the same reason BetaMax went down: The porn industry isn't allowed to put their stuff on BRDs. They have full access to the HD-DVDs... So nix that.
Also, if you NEED a reason to get a PS3, think of Armored Core 4. But then again, that's on the X360 as well (I'll be getting both, actually). I guess you could go with Gran Turismo 5... That's what I'll be doing. AND DON'T CONFUSE GTHD WITH GT5. They're NOT the same.

There is no GTHD anymore, brit. Sony decided to scrap it in favor of GT5. The work done on GTHD was released on Christmas Eve as a free "test" version on the PSNetwork.

The content advantage that Blu-ray enjoys is another major factor that should become more and more evident now that the Blu-ray exclusive studios (Disney, Fox, Sony, MGM and Lionsgate) are starting to release more titles in the format. When looking at the 20 top selling DVDs of 2006 almost all were released by movie studios supporting Blu-ray, which means that titles such as Pirates of the Carribean and Cars will only be available for Blu-ray. The content advantage should further shift in Blu-ray's favor as the format neutral studios (Warner, Paramount) catch up their Blu-ray release schedules with HD-DVD so that the same movies are available for both formats.
Overall the Blu-ray backers are confident that it's only a matter of time before the Blu-ray format becomes the dominant format in the US market, just as it already accounts for 96% of the market in Japan.
Personally, I'm happy with my PS2. If I were going to buy a next gen console, it wouldn't be a PS3 or a 360, it'd be the Wii.

Basically though, regardless of what you claim to be the potential difficulties in bringing MGS4 to the 360, it will absolutely happen if PS3 sales haven't picked up enough by the time of its release for Konami to be able to justify keeping it exclusive.
It's all about the Benamins after all, being that Konami is a business and all that, so if the PS3 isn't the mega-hit that everyone seemed to have expected that it would be by the time Konami is ready to release the game, they won't have a choice but to bring it to the 360 to recoup development costs.
It's common business sense, and it's why alot of developers are delaying or cancelling PS3 exclusives entirely. The PS3's current market penetration simply doesn't justify bringing a game out exclusively on the console. Not at this point. Developers seem to be playing a wait and see game, and to me, that sort of thing doesn't bode well for Sony, who's systems were almost a liscense to print money for developers. It shows a lack of confidence in the company that gamers keen to these things are picking up on.

I fail to forget that the PS3 isn't available in Europe? Faulty wording aside, you can't factor in something that hasn't happened yet, which is why I didn't mention it. And hey, while initial demand might be somewhat high there, just like it was here, who's to say that it wont cool off, just like it did here? I know that's simply speculation, but that's sort of the point. Bottom line is though, that if the system doesn't pick up momentum either here or in Japan, the European sales aren't going to mean much in the scheme of things anyway, no matter how good they may end up being.
I knew that you'd bring up the 360 to make the PS3 sales in Japan look a little less embarrassing, but the thing is, noone ever expected the console to give either Sony or Nintendo serious competition there. It's a non-entity in Japan, having enjoyed a brief sales spike due to Blue Dragon.
Really though, I feel like an ass even letting myself get baited into an XBox vs PS3 debate, when I simply brought all of this up to point out that those Sony exclusives wouldn't remain so if the PS3 continued to be something that everyone who wants one has already bought.
This discussion isn't intended to be Sony vs Microsoft, those points were simply to illustrate that the system isn't worth buying right now, and that if it doesn't pick up momentum, that developers won't hesitate to pull exclusives, or release them on the 360 as well in order to recoup sales, thus removing from the equation any advantage there may have been to buying one.
This guy asked us what console was worth buying, not which one you have a massive hard on for, after all, so it's best to present the facts and let him decide. Giving him all of the possibilities allows him to better make a decision, instead of going into this blindly, like you would have him do.
Oh, and as a point of interest, didn't you recieve your PS3 for Christmas? So while your experiences with the thing are relevant, you're one of the least qualified people to be telling anyone whether or not it's worth the ducats, as you didn't actually buy the thing. If it tanks, it's no sweat off of your back, though one would be led to believe differently by how vehemently you seem to come to their support anytime anyone says anything even remotely unflattering about them. This isn't to say that your opinion on the matter isn't appriciated, just that it doesn't seem to be as unbiased a perspective as one who had to pay for the thing may have.

Look, if stand-alone Blue Ray units don't sell to numbers that make the PS3's lame overall market penetration a non-issue, it's possible that Blue Ray will meet the same fate. Which isn't to say that HD-DVD is assured a win, or even worth buying itself. Really, alot of people are happy with buying DVD players that upscale the picture of their existing library, leaving the Blue Ray vs HD-DVD shit alone completely. Both formats could very well crash and burn.
No, the point here is that buying a PS3 based largely on the Blue Ray drive, is a stupid proposition. It's silly, given the uncertainty of the still newish market. Oh, Blue Ray itself, at least as a storage format, likely won't go anywhere, but it's possible that along with HD-DVD, Blue Ray will end up just another movie format that didn't take off. So yeah, I stick by what I said about it not being worth buying a PS3 for.
So in closing, let's break it all down. The system doesn't have the games to support it right now, meaning that the only reason to own one is for the movies. However, buying one when the market is still so new, and the ultimate fate of Blue Ray is up in the air, is pointless. A gaming console is only as good as its games, so if the games aren't there to justify the cost, all the secondary features in the world aren't worth shit, especially when you could end up buying one only to see Blue Ray movies discontinued soon after.
I still say that the dude should wait until there are games for it that are interesting enough to him to justify the cost. That way, he's got games to play on the chance that Blue Ray does fail completely at existance as a film format. So I repeat to the topic originator, if there are any games worth it to you to justify a PS3, then go buy one. If not, then pass on it and wait until there is. Buy it for the games, stay for the movies if it appeals to you, but don't buy it for the movies and wait around several months for games to come out that justify the purchase. That's just stupid.

We get that you love your Sony Grillstation 3. Really, we do. But in the context of this thread, your hard-on for the system does nothing to help the topic originator, and so unless you're willing to offer up clear reasons as to why the system is worth owning at this point, reasons that are so compelling as to make spending that kind of cash right now make sense, then you're better off not bothering to get involved. I'm sure he appricates your perspective, as we all do, but aside from relating your personal love affair with the console, it's absolutely useless as a tool to help him determine what he should do. That's what it boils down to.
All of the rest, while valid points of discussion, don't matter when you consider that not buying one right now gives him plenty of time to see how things play out. If I'm right, then he dodged a bullet. If I'm wrong, and I would love to be wrong, then all waiting will have done would be to assure that there are games avialable for it that he'll be interested in by the time he's ready to purchase it. In other words, this bickering is pointless.
Again, while you may be content with owning one and waiting for games to come out, not having actually payed for the thing yourself, this is a matter of $600 bucks or more, and that's not a small sum of money. It makes no sense to spend it if he's not going to get any use out of the thing. Once more, I'll reiterate my suggestion that he wait and see how things go, and make his decisions once there are games for it that interest him. Hopefully this time around you take from this the signifigance of that.
No, they were not. They were legitimate. I didn't even have to pick one up to be sure, as they had a big fucking sign printed up posted on the display about how they had the systems right there in stock, ready to be sold, and an employee standing not too far off to the side keeping his eye on the lot of them, while informing customers of their chance to finally own the high-tech grill. Just grab one off the stack and we'll ring you up! Noone seemed to give a shit. I still did pick one up by the way. In a moment of weakness I almost considered spending $600 for no good reason.
