Thats not the main reason for them as you can use credit cards for quite a few things now xD.

But i guess thats a way to look at it.

That is how it initially worked when Xbox live came out. Ability for CC payments came later. So yeah, it is a way to look at it.

I thought PS3 used dollar amounts since the beginning...

The point of MSPoints is exactly as Sprung said, which is why at the beginning, you couldn't buy points in the amount that would be exact change for an item. You wanted 800MSP? TOO FUCKING BAD; you gotta buy 1200 and take this dick.
