Yeah and no.

I mean, basic combos can be made using A+B+C, but you're going to have to do better that that to get any good combos. Plus, almost all attacks can be shielded against. It's fairly fast paced too.

So blocking tends to prevent you from getting knocked higher, but it seems shielding doesn't.
