It's used both for teachers and doctors. Master, as in martial arts master, is usually shishou.

Yes, yes! I am now mildly interested in Kanji. (I knew isha as well because of that chopper dude in one piece) Honestly I really am interested in learning Japanese, but I have to focus on other things now. My life is pretty much shit, and it'll go downwards forever if I don't get out of this country soon...

If I do get out, I'll have time to pursue it more seriously.

In my case, it's inverted: it's because of anime that I got into video gaming.
The first video games I've ever played was Adventure Island IV (NES), Aladdin, and some Japanese game that had two rodents as the playable characters.

It's not really silent in the same way that, say, the "B" in "subtle" is silent. There are almost no true silent letters in Japanese, and the language is pretty much entirely phonetic. Still, it's true that it can often become devoiced when it occurs at the end of words, and it's standard practice to do so in Tokyo Japanese (the sort of Japanese you'll probably be learning as a foreign speaker). It's not true of all regions or of everyone's accent, though. I've met Japanese people who pronounce the "u" at the end of words quite strongly. ^^;;;

Btw, try to stay optimistic geeze and I'm sure find a way for yourself. I've been stressed as well, even considered suicide (in fact, starting to study Japanese was one of the things that got my mind off that), but really, always try to look on the bright side and make the most of your situation.

I can read and write French okay. I don't really have much confidence when it comes to speaking it because I've never really tried, and I know that my pronunciation is probably completely atrocious as a result. ^^;;;

I could read the first part with rikaichan but I got stuck at "まり酷くない". Granted, I don't know any grammer and just vaguely understand what a sentence mean even if I know all the words as a result.

Only to begin with. ^^;;; Kanji actually become super-useful later on, and you'll grow to hate text without kanji because it's so hard to read. They also make vocabulary acquisition much easier. Unless your native language is something like Mandarin Chinese or Korean, the majority of words in Japanese are going to sound completely foreign to you, and it's much easier to remember that a word is made up of "X kanji plus Y kanji" than it is to just remember it as a collection of sounds.

Also, I don't think kanji are particularly "hard" per se. Just really, really time consuming. ^^;;;

I'm pretty interested in learning French as well. I was actually interested more in French before watching all teh anime and getting into Japanese. I had a university admission for montreal and I was really excited about learning french there (they speak french in montreal) but my visa got rejected. :(

Well, in retrospect I shouldn't have gotten my hopes up, people from my country are hated all around the world. :shrug:

If you think kanji in general is hard, try some medieval Japanese. :trollface:
