Some people simply are offended if there's something like the commandments written on slate in a public school or something. Also that "God Bless America" crap, as difficult to believe it may seem, some people get stingy about that(obviously only picky atheists, or extremely open-minded religious fellows).

Though I'm a very firm atheist, I really don't mind stuff like that either, but there are people who are annoyed, thus we should just do them the favor to get them to shut the fuck up. But other stuff makes sense, like banning smoking in public places. It's not so easy to say: "Don't like smoke? Then don't inhale, dumbass.".

I definitely agree that people shouldn't be unnecessarily subjected to physically harmful substances and actions.

I do think that there should be designated environments for smoking and the like. An obvious example is that I personally don't enjoy cigarette smoke, but it's nice to have smoking allowed in bars so that your smoker buddies can hang out and not have to run outside and freeze their asses off in the middle of winter just for a smoke. I don't have to go to the bar if I don't want to.

On the other hand, it would also be nice to have more smoke-free bars so that you could have a more lung friendly drinking experience if you would like to. Actually, I don't think that there are any smoke free bars in my town...

Actually, Chaos, that's exactly what the Germans were afraid of when they banned the swastika. They feared it could prove a rallying point for Nazis...rather not a bad fear even today, considering the present day fearmongerers trying to provoke something between the native (i.e. those who have lived in Europe for at least 1 generation ;)) population and the Muslim immigrants (They're taking our jobs, raising the crime rate, and generally are bad people who should be kicked out! :P). It's a little silly to spread it to all of Europe, admittedly, and it's probably a bit silly for the Germans to have clung to this particular ban today, but it's not as ridiculous as you make it out to be. Even in America, after all, there are problems with racism. Granted, I prefer the US method of letting the racists show off their stupidity in public rather than the German method for suppressing it (Look at Yugoslavia and Russia for what happens when racial and religious issues are suppressed rather than dealt with), but I can understand why some would prefer either.

Actually, I can understand the complaints about representing a single religion in state buildings, too. It makes it look partisan, quite simply. Kinda like a person showing up for jury duty in, well, full Nazi regalia. Now, if multiple religions were represented, or it was less about religion than humor, or it simply wasn't blatantly obvious and in-your-face (Your Jesus, Moses, Muhammad, and Buddha gambling statue, in comparison to the 10 Commandments engraved in a massive monument right in the front hall), then there wouldn't be nearly as many complaints.

Both are basically slippery-slope arguments. If we allow this, then it just paves the road for further and worse things to happen. Now, slippery-slope is actually fallacious reasoning (If I smoke marijuana, I will most likely step up to crack cocane, the gateway drug slippery slope theory), but there is a psychological process that can help validate its use in specific situations, the idea that gradual steps to a given concluding action can help desensitize a person to the consequences of that concluding action, where just giving that same person the concluding action right off the bat will result in certain refusal.

That's pretty much the equivalent of declaring that someone who wears a Jason mask for halloween MUST blanketly support the killing of random teenagers with machetes

The only real problem with Prince Harry's costume was the fact that is was badly put together and lacked the sexiness of a well done nazi-costume.

i would say that if Germany already doesn't allow it, it's a smart choice. i don't disagree with the whole American Rebel flag issue, i just believe that what the Nazi's did a tad more damage than the Reb's.

I was directing that comment towards Talimar, not you. ^__^ I know what it represents, but the whole shiznit that bears the sign as its flag is what scares(and offends) people.

True, his costume did lack quality, but I doubt that the EU had a bad case of haemorroids because of Prince Henry's horrible taste in fashion.

Edit: Polobunny, their appearence doesn't matter, it's the music that counts. At least before this huge wave of homophobia arose in the 90's, everyone thought bands like Judas Priest and Manowar were as manly as a man can be. Who would've thought that Rob Halford was queer...

I think it's bullshit that they haven't acknowledged where the symbol really comes from yet. It's an Ancient Indian symbol for virility, fertitlity, strength etc. I have one on my door, but not in the form that Joseph Goebbels had one in his arm.

^ Almost every ancient culture has used the swastika, not just the Indian. :P



PS-Banning something so deeply rooted in history is stupid and ridiculous.
