I believe auto-saving is the most common saving method for modern games. I'm not a fan either.

the one bad thing(so far) about I am alive is the combat otherwise it's good there's also no zombies, monsters or mutants even though it feels like there should be.
Some games would be quite rough at 480i and you'll definitely want component over composite. If your monitor has DVI or HDMI you could also use that, the former with an adapter.
Easiest way to test would be a game you know can run in progressive scan. Suikoden 4 supports it if you wanted to test. I think you can run uLaunch at 480p (and other resolutions) but I don't remember.

I think only Hi Scan and SFP supported progressive signals.
If your monitor has DVI you can use that with a passive adapter or a cable.
