Didn't bat an eyelid when I first saw this in my Facebook newsfeed, thinking that someone was just posting a Dr. Doom quote that they thought was cool. Then I read it again, and realised that the dialogue is actually a recent quote from David Cameron that somebody has edited in. Oh dear. D: You know it's time to worry about your government when the things your Prime Minister is saying wouldn't sound out of place coming from a supervillain.
My girlfriend mention that on Skype when we were talking a few days ago, and it lead to a discussion on how messed up that is. Isn't that the idea, for us to obey the law and be left alone!? :|Quote:

You can break the law by being involved in something overseas that your country doesn't "approve of" for whatever reason.
Long gone are the days where you go could go off and fight for a cause you believed was just, come home and everything was dandy. In fact you may have even got some respect for doing such a thing and/or possibly have your own country's military approach you with job offers.
Now you can't fight for what you believe...unless your only belief is your country, and whatever the powers that be want you to do for it.

I saw that. Cool that they gave people a choice (as much as I'm in favour of gay marriage, and as much as I'm happy that it was legalised here in Scotland, I'm not sure it's a decision the government should take without public approval), and cooler still that Ireland said yes. ^_^ Though I can understand it's probably going to disappoint a lot of people. Unless you have like a 90%+ majority voting one way, things like this will always split a country. Was the same with the independence referendum decision here in Scotland, really. It's difficult to say that a decision is right when a sizeable portion of the country's population disagrees with it, but at the same time there's sometimes no better way to decide these things than a majority vote. Yeah, I read the 75% figure too. It's definitely large enough for there to be no debate about what the majority of the country wants (and quite encouraging to see, on a personal level, as someone who is very much on the yes side~ ^_^), but that's still 1/4 of the country (if we assume that the voter turnout is reflective of the general populace's views, anyway) you have who are opposed to the decision. That's quite a lot of disappointed people, and by no means an insignificant number. I think it's definitely the best way of resolving these sorts of issues, but it still must sting for all the people who voted no.
Yeah, I was kind of wondering if it was a one time thing, or if it's the case for all constitutional revisions over there. Think it's a pretty good way of going about these things, as generally anything worth revising the constitution over is going to be something significant enough that the public deserve a say.
And yeah, I read about that. One part of me wants to be petty and say that there have for so many years been people in positions of power across the world who have used their platforms to speak out against the rights of LGBT people, and that this is really only a reversal of that. But ultimately I don't think it's particularly fair for those in positions of power to try and swing these things one way or another, even if, as in this case, they're acting in my interests. Would like for decisions that are supposed to be the people's to be, as far as is possible, left to the people themselves.
