You will not be charged for the subscription until the free 30-days of game time have expired. If you wish to cancel the subscription during the free 30-days of game time, you can do so. John: I'm not paying for something that is going to be free in January. 30 days from now will almost be enough time. As stupid as your idea is, surprisingly I will wait until STO is free.
