This. ^_^ It's usually just a stylistic choice, but sometimes it can be a matter of formality / a space-saving measure. If you play Sora no Kiseki, which really loves its kanji, you'll encounter things like 否 (いいえ), 此れ (これ) and 其れ (それ). Insanity. :'D
