I'm inclined to disagree. The story of XII was pretty decent, but the characters, in a character-driven RPG, were utterly unlikable gits. This didn't help their case at all in any way.

Basch: "I'm here to protect my princess and provide plot insulation as to why Vaan stays around. Then I wrap up that plot point in about as much time as it takes to make a sandwich. Shame, really."
Fran: "I'm the obligatory titties, now with built-in bunny ears."

The story itself was fairly deep, but if I hate the people I'm supposed to be carting around the world, something's going to have to give eventually. Plus, they really have no driving reason to stick together. At all. Vaan is quite possibly the most uninteresting protagonist of a Final Fantasy game ever, including Final Fantasy I.

They would've been better off making it a war story about his older brother, or whoever that dude that dies at the beginning is.

Oh, I remember XII now. Yeah, I didn't like Vaan at all. He was basically a cardboard cutout of character. The story was good, but the characters sucked. I like games where I'm invested in what happens to the characters. This one, not so much.

Yeah, I get annoyed with the fanservice. Square-Enix acts like only males play FF, but women play it too, and that annoyed me.
