I think they were trying to stay away from repeats from the older games even though that failed, even so I doubt we'll see the likes of Venom, Gambit, Colossus, etc.

I'd like to see Ghost Rider, but according to Capcom he must have his bike or he's worthless, cool stuuf I guess. Iron Fist would have been great, the motherfucker is a martial arts master come on...

Don't forget his shotgun, it was a dumb excuse to not include the character. They gave the same excuse for Silver Surfer, that and the fact that he looks too similar to Iceman, personally I was okay with out Surfer, game doesn't needs another godlike character.

Either way, there are still plenty of good characters who weren't in 2.

Naming a few more: Havok, Doctor Strange, Black Panther, Mysterio (he'd be awesome IMO), Beast, Mr. Sinister, Sentry...

They have too many good characters to choose from to have any excuse for picking a nobody.

The only nobody I really care about is Stingray :lol
