I've acknowledged from the start the possibility that producers could decide on a sequel for the sake of $$$, but the assumption some people make--that Urobuchi intentionally ended so as to require a sequel--is invalid (and stupid).

Thank god there are still anime capable of entertaining me, as I was really losing hope this year. If they work in a beach episode or even an ounce of moe, I'm going to scream. Violently.
I'd like it if the plot developed faster, but this IS a shounen, and the action scenes keep my interest (I usually bore easily with action scenes).
My only real complaint is that the bold character outlines really bother me. I've seen people gush about how it makes the characters stand out from the background, but I think that's a BAD thing. They skillfully animate these really beautiful scenic backdrops and intricately detailed characters. . . and then combine them as heavily traced lay-over figures. It's almost like a hi-def South Park. I'm sure today's emo-infused culture thinks drawing black circles around something makes it stand out more, but for me, the black circles are a distraction from what they're trying to highlight.
Started watching Baccano!. It's a bit weird, and I'm still wondering how they'll gonna fit that many characters in just 16 eps. The fact that the light novel is still ongoing is also mildly disturbing.
Actually, the last 3 episodes are post-climax DVD release extras. But what the story lacks in drawn out character development it makes up for with phenomenal pacing. And suspense. And fun.Quote:

Rewatched the entire Mardock Scramble trilogy now that the third one's been translated.
I loved the first movie; it was a perfect throwback to the nineties, with a fair helping of (plot relevant) sex and nudity, gratuitous violence, and some bizarrely eccentric villains, all surrounding a court case in a grim cyberpunk setting.
The sequel was a huge letdown. The climax occurs mid-way through, and then we get to watch the protagonist gamble for half a movie. Literally. At least a quarter of the damn film is dedicated to the analysis of a roulette spinner's game philosophy, which is even more pointless to the plot than the card game.
Probably the only movie I've ever seen in my life where I can discuss the ending without spoiling anything: they're going to play Blackjack! BUM BUM BUUUM~!
Sorry if I ruined the movie for you.
And of course the third movie is over a half hour of watching her play blackjack.
Honestly, what the fuck? Is this Oceans 75? A three hour long story, one hour of which is gambling in a casino? The second half makes up for it (mostly), but the exciting climax feels out of place given all the time wasted -not- building up to it.
Despite all it did wrong, I still loved the dystopian, nihilistic feel of the trilogy, the humanisms and various themes and other elements you can't find in modern anime. . .
But the best part was by far the talking mouse/sentient weapon Oeufcoque.

Anyway, finished Escaflowne last night.
I'm confident it's one of the inspirations for Xenogears, so obviously I liked it.
There were a couple elements to the story I wasn't crazy about, a completely ludicrous twist near the end, I thought the ending was less than ideal--though still wonderfully delivered--and there were some points throughout where I had trouble keeping attention for some reason--don't know if it was the directing or animation (giant pointy noses!). . .
but I'm still tempted to score it a 9 just for love of the story, various themes.
I mean, cross-world mythopoeic fantasy setting with mecha and an evil empire trying to control fate through magical technology? Love trian-uh, pentagrams, royal sibling rivalry, political intrigue?
I need more anime scripted from old school RPGs, please! DADDY LIKE!
Berserk is awesome for similar reasons, the Golden Age Arc at least. Not the movies (which are decent but way too condensed), but the manga/TV series.
Berserk is one of the only anime I've given a 10 (up there with Wolf's Rain, Baccano, and Suzumiya Haruhi no Shoushitsu[Death Note lost a point for not knowing where to stop]), so I can officially certify that you know your shit! :)
I still love the movies; the trick is to NOT compare them to the source material. Taken as their own individual story, more like a spin-off or inspiration piece than a remake, they're still fantastic in their own right. They lack the development, but the direction reeks of epic.
The manga. . . ehhh. I think Miura is content to let his masterpiece die as a decrepit Alzheimer's riddled husk rather than going out in a flash of glory or a Great Eclipse. Those five volumes worth of troll battles bored the hell out of me, and even though it got better again, I'm not too eager to catch up because I know it isn't actually going anywhere. I think it's a safe bet that this is one of those manga that doesn't end until Miura does, and then those of us who've been following it for over a decade are left without an ending.
