Like it or not it's where a lot of news comes from nowadays. Eyewitness accounts and freedom to distribute information means the big stories can be out there for public consumption faster than a news agency can get a reporter on the scene.

Do keep in mind the Megaupload founder was living in a huge fuck off mansion in New Zealand and had a garage full of expensive sports cars with custom license plates. This isn't exactly a teenage kid downloading Lil Wayne albums in his bedroom. They repeatedly ignored DMCA takedown notices, paid their more prolific uploaders actual money to share the latest film and music releases and as a company were making more profit in a single year than any of you will see in your lifetime, all off the back of filesharing. They're not as innocent as they first appear.

Yeah. I am assuming if the government is doing this they have proper legal grounds. They wouldn't want to lose. I was waiting for more and more to come out as potentially a court case occurred. I imagine this will be settled out of court though.

Drug dealing is a much older and more established illegal way to make money, when a is taken down in the wake of the SOPA votes it will get more news coverage.
